James D. McWilliams

James D. McWilliams is a graduate of Vanderbilt University Law School and a nearly 10-year veteran journalist. Currently he is a business reporter for The State newspaper in Columbia, S.C. He also has written court news for The Tampa Tribune and business and technology news for The Huntsville (Ala.) Times.

McWilliams worked as a summer legislative assistant in the Capitol Hill office of U.S. Senator Max Cleland in 2002, and worked in the litigation section of King & Ballow Law Offices in Nashville, Tenn., during the summer of 2001.

At Vanderbilt, McWilliams won two Scholastic Excellence Awards, participated in the Bass, Berry & Sims First Amendment Moot Court Competition, and was a member of the Christian Legal Society and the Black Law Students Association. He graduated in May 2003 with a doctorate in law and a special certification in law and business.

His undergraduate degree in communications is from Oakwood College in Alabama. At Oakwood, he won scholarships from the Dow Jones Newspaper Fund and the Newhouse Foundation.
