Iran, Iraq Sign Demining MoU

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian and Iraqi defense ministers signed a memorandum of understanding on landmine detection and clearance here on Wednesday.

The two sides inked the MoU at the first joint meeting of the two countries on demining for cleaning up the minefields and following an agreement between the two countries' defense ministers.

At the meeting, the two countries' officials exchanged information on mined fields and discussed ways to speed up efforts to remove landmines on the frontier routes.

The mines are left from 1980-1988 Iraqi imposed war on Iran.

About 1 million soldiers were killed or wounded during the war which involved fights on land and in the air, in the oil lanes of the Persian Gulf and with missile and chemical weapons attacks of Iraq against Iran.
