Israel Pounding Gaza Despite UN Ceasefire Call

TEHRAN (FNA)- Israeli jets continue non-stop bombardment of the Gaza Strip, despite a UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire.

The Security Council resolution was approved Thursday night by a 14-0 vote, with the United States abstaining.

The resolution "stresses the urgency of and calls for an immediate, durable and fully respected cease-fire, leading to the full withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza", MNA said.

Analysts say the US abstention vote weakened the importance of the resolution because the US support would have placed more pressure on the Tel Aviv regime to halt its senseless war in Gaza.

Overnight, at least 50 air strikes hit Gaza, one attack reportedly killing five Palestinians, BBC reported.

The Israeli security cabinet was to meet to study the UN call.

According to Gaza health officials, 804 Palestinians have been killed since the Israeli onslaught began on December 27. Medics say at least half of the dead are civilians.

Meanwhile, a senior Egyptian cleric has called on Muslims across the world to stage rallies on Friday to demonstrate anger at Israel's insane war against Palestinians.

Yusuf al-Qaradawi, who heads the Union of Islamic Scholars, said Friday prayers should be dedicated to expressing solidarity with the Palestinians.
