Serial Explosions in Assam Kill Five

TEHRAN (FNA)- Five people were killed and at least 20 people were wounded, six of them critically, in a string of powerful explosions Thursday in Assam's main city of Guwahati.

A police spokesman said two of the blasts took place in crowded marketplaces, while another took place on a roadside dustbin.

"Five people have died so far and 20 injured according to preliminary reports," a senior Assam police official said, the Islamic republic news agency reported.

The first blast took at Birubari area in the city on a garbage bin injuring two people. The blast took place around 1630 hours IST (Indian Standard Time).

There were two other near simultaneous blasts at the Bhootnath and Bhangagarh markets in the city.

"The nature of the explosives are not immediately known although it appears to be some improvised explosive devices," the police official said.

The official said the bombs in two of the places were planted on a parked bicycle.

"We suspect it to be the handiwork of the ULFA (United Liberation Front of Asom)," Deputy Inspector General of Assam police G P Singh said.

The injured were shifted to local hospitals with multiple wounds.
