According to the research group, the natural compound destroyed 76% of leukemia cells within 24 hours in laboratory tests without harming healthy cells.
"What everyone seeks is an agent that has an effect on cancer cells but leaves normal cells alone, and this shows that grape seed extract fits into this category," said the research team leader and toxicologist Xianglin Shi on Thursday.
Despite the excellent results, Professor Shi noted that it was too early to encourage people to eat grapes, grape seeds or grape skins to prevent cancer.
The team further discovered that the active ingredients in the grape seed extract caused the cancer cells to die.
The findings were published in the January 1 edition of the journal Clinical Cancer Research.
Earlier studies proved that grape seed extract has an effect on skin, breast, bowel, lung, stomach, and prostate cancer cells in the laboratory.
Medical evidence has revealed that eating fruits and vegetables can help individuals prevent cancer.
