Iran Asks UNESCO to Aid Release of Reporter from Israel's Jail

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iran asked the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to help release of correspondent of Iran's Arab-language tv station Alalam arrested by Israeli troops in Gaza early this week.

Iran's representative in UNESCO has already submitted a letter to the organization's Director General Koichiro Matsuura to ask him to take an explicit and firm stance towards Israeli measures in Gaza destroying the region's schools and universities, the Iranian students news agency reported.

Iran's representative in another letter has called for Matsuura to take a step regarding freedom of Alalam correspondent in Gaza who has been illegally arrested by Israeli soldiers in January 2009 while sending a report over Gaza events.

The letter asserts arresting reporters is against the free flow of information and informing the world of current events happening in Gaza Strip thus Iran wants the UNESCO Director General to aid release of the reporter.
