US University Presidents Arrive in Tehran

TEHRAN (FNA)- Presidents of six American universities arrived in Tehran, following an invitation from Iran's Sharif University of Technology.

The visit is part of an exchange program between universities in Iran and the US, coordinated by Saeed Sohrabpour, the President of Sharif University of Technology. The program aims to establish a forum for communication, a basis for greater understanding and to strengthen academic links between the two countries.

The American academics will visit a number of different Iranian universities, including Tehran University. The visit complements a series of exchange visits to Iran by US scientists to discuss topics of mutual scientific interest, press tv said.

The presidents, which come from three private and three public institutions in the US, include Jared Cohon from Carnegie Mellon University, David Leebron of Rice University, J. Bernard Machen from the University of Florida, C. D. Mote, Jr. from the University of Maryland, David Skorton of Cornell University and Larry Vanderhoef from the University of California UC Davis.

The exchange trip was sanctioned by the US Department of State and was organized by the Association of American Universities, a non-profit organization that concentrates on issues important to research universities.

The trip follows calls by the Iranian government for an increase in the academic relations between the two nations.
