MRI Can Damage Cochlear Implants

TEHRAN (FNA)- Findings of a recent study suggested that exposure to certain MRI machines may cause problems by demagnetize the magnets used in cochlear implants.



According to the study published in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, strong magnetic fields exerted by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machines induce voltage and temperature changes that damage the implant or harm the patient.

Internal magnets responsible for connecting the external processor of these hearing devices with the surgically implanted components interact with MRI magnets.

The angle between the magnetic field of the implant and the MRI, however, determines the severity of the demagnetization process, indicating that the process reaches unacceptable levels in angles greater than 80 degrees.

Cochlear implant is a small electronic device implanted behind the individual's ear improving the recipient's hearing ability.
