Over the past few years, Aqalu was suffering from leukemia, for which he could seldom appear in theater or cinematic projects. However, he never stopped working in radio performances.
Kamal Tabrizi's "The Reward" (2008) turned out to be his swansong in cinema. He had previously stared in Tabrizi's "Take a Look at the Sky Sometimes" and "A Piece of Bread".
Born in Qazvin, he studied theater at the University of Tehran, an MNA report said.
Although Aqalu had previously appeared in several outstanding plays, he rose to fame by playing the role of a royal court scribe in "The Sultan and the Shepherd", a TV series directed by Dariush Farhang in 1983.
Starring in Habib Kavosh's "Dadshah", Aqalu got his start in Iranian cinema in 1983.
Some of his other credits in cinema include "Rich and Poor", "Small Wishes" and "The Silk Chains".
In addition, he appeared in over 20 plays including "Antigone in New York", "The Moon Is Hidden", "Earth's All Obsessions", "The Wedding of the Blood", and "Where the Fish Turn to Stone".
Aqalu also experimented with dubbing, and his deep voice notably helped him to give a perfect performance in all media.
