"Russia believes it is necessary to halt immediately the large-scale acts of force against the Gaza Strip, which have already caused considerable victims and suffering amongst the Palestinian population," the foreign ministry said.
"At the same time, we call on the leadership of Hamas to stop firing rocket on Israeli territory," it said in a statement, adding that the most important priority now was for the parties to restore a truce.
Massive Israeli air strikes across the Gaza Strip killed more than 180 Palestinians and wounded over 200 citizens on Saturday.
EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana also on Saturday called for an "immediate ceasefire" in Gaza, one of his spokesmen told AFP.
