Ki-moon Slams Israeli Defiance of UN Resolution

TEHRAN (FNA)- The UN secretary general called Israel's prime minister to express disappointment over Israel's defiance of a UN resolution.

The UN Security Council on Thursday nearly unanimously approved a resolution for an "immediate" ceasefire followed by the "full withdrawal" of Israeli forces from the Gaza Strip. Fourteen of the 15-member council voted in favor of the resolution while Israel's main ally the United States, abstained.

"The Secretary General (Ban Ki-moon) spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert by phone this afternoon and expressed his disappointment that the violence is continuing on the ground in disregard of yesterday's Security Council resolution," press tv quoted Michele Montas as saying.

The Israeli onslaught has so far left at least 800 Palestinians dead and another 3,300 injured.

Olmert vowed on Friday that Israel would keep up its offensive in Gaza despite the council's call for an immediate end to hostilities.

"The IDF (Israel Defense Forces) will continue to operate in order to defend the citizens of Israel and will carry out the task it was given for the operation."

"Israel has never agreed to any outside influence," a statement from Olmert's office quoted him as saying.

"The Council has clearly said what should happen and the parties should comply. There needs to be an immediate, durable and fully respected cease-fire leading to the full withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza," the spokeswoman quoted the UN chief as saying.

Montas further added that Ban was continuing his contacts with the international community "in hopes of ensuring that Resolution 1860 is implemented without delay".
