Iran Premier League:

Esteqlal Win Saba Battery 2-1

TEHRAN (FNA)- Tehran's Esteqlal football club maintained their top position in the Iranian Premier league (IPL) following a valuable victory over Saba.

The Blues managed to notch up a 2-1 win against Saba before more than 55,000 spectators at Tehran's Azadi Stadium on Friday.

Esteqlal took the lead after 38 minutes when striker Alireza Abbasfard scored the opener on a bicycle kick.

Esteqlal's captain Farhad Majidi doubled the advantage just after the break with a powerful header, press tv reported.

Saba then pushed forward and reduced the deficit through Mostafa Haqqipour nine minutes from time.

Saba put a lot of pressure on Esteqlal in the last ten minutes of the game to equalize the score but it was Esteqlal which gained the whole three points of the match.

"I am delighted that we got the three points of the game. No other team had ever put pressure on Esteqlal," said Esteqlal coach Amir Qalenoi.

Meanwhile, Saba manager Firouz Karimi praised the Blues performance and said Esteqlal deserved to win.

"I believe Esteqlal deserved to win the game. It is a perfect team in terms of technical and physical abilities," Karimi said.

"I think it was the most beautiful match this season," he added.

Esteqlal currently leads the standings on 46 points followed by Zob Ahan with 41. Sepahan and Persepolis are placed third and fourth with 37 points. Saba sits fifth on 35 points.
