Iranian Club Ready to Pay Kanoute's Fine over Palestinian Support
TEHRAN (FNA)- An Iranian football club is ready to pay the 3,000 euros (4,093 dollars) cash fine imposed on Sevilla striker Frederic Kanoute.
The disciplinary committee of the Spanish football federation last Friday fined Kanoute for displaying a shirt in support of Palestine in the Gaza conflict with Israel.
Kanoute - a French-born Muslim who plays for the Mali national team - showed the shirt after scoring for Sevilla in Wednesday's 2-1 King's Cup defeat of Deportivo La Coruna.
Saeed Azari, manager of Iran first division club Zob Ahan Isfahan club, said the club was ready to pay the cash fine on behalf of the player, the daily Sports Iran reported Tuesday.
Azari told Sports Iran that Kanoute has been asked on his personal website where the money should be transferred to, and that Iran captain Javad Nekounam, who also plays in Spain at Osasuna, has been contacted to inform Kanoute accordingly.
The move by Kanoute was shown numerous times on Iranian television and found great admiration here. Iran has harshly condemned Israel's attacks on the Gaza Strip.
