UN Head Praises Iran's Decision on Saberi's Case

TEHRAN (FNA)- UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon lauded Tehran's decision to free Iranian freelance Journalist Roxana Saberi from prison, a UN spokesman stated on Tuesday.

"He (Ban Ki-moon) had discussed the matter on several occasions with the government of Iran, most recently with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in Geneva, and he is pleased that the case has been resolved," Farhan Haq told reporters at a press conference at UN Headquarters in New York.

Saberi, an Iranian freelance journalist who was detained late January on charges of spying for the United States was released on Monday following a verdict by the appeals court.

The appeals court considered her guilty in accordance with Article 505 of the Civil Law, but after examining the matter very carefully, her jail sentence was decreased from eight years into a two-year suspended term for five years.

In accordance with the verdict, she is allowed to leave Iran, but she is forbidden to work as a reporter in Iran for five years.

Earlier, her lawyers said that a letter by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to the Judiciary power on Saberi's case had played a major role in her release.
