U.S. weather forecasters say a new tropical storm, named Danny, has formed in the Atlantic Ocean east of the Bahamas and could become stronger in the coming days.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami said in its latest report Wednesday that Danny was about 625 kilometers east of Nassau and 1,185 kilometers south-southeast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina.

The storm was moving northwest.  It was expected to dump as much as 10 centimeters of rain over the central and northwestern Bahamas.   Heavy rains also were expected in the Turks and Caicos Islands.

Danny is the fourth named storm of this year's Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from June 1 through November 30.

Separately, forecasters say Tropical Storm Ignacio has weakened as it moves northwest far out in the Pacific Ocean.
