1St Vice-President to Leave for China Tuesday for SCO Meeting

TEHRAN (FNA)- First Vice-President Mohammad-Reza Rahimi will leave here for Beijing, China, on Tuesday to attend the 8th ministerial meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization which is to begin on October 14 in the Chinese capital.

Prime ministers and deputy prime ministers of the SCO's member states are to discuss implementation of the decisions made during the organization's 9th Summit which was held in Russia last June.

As an observer in the SCO, Iran is seeking membership in the organization. President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has said earlier that Tehran was determined to boost cooperation with the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and believed this would benefit all regional states.

The SCO is an intergovernmental mutual-security and economic organization which was founded in 2001 by the leaders of China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan, the Islamic republic news agency reported.

During his three-day visit to China, Rahimi is to exchange views with his counterparts on major bilateral, regional and international developments.

He will be accompanied by a number of ministers and members of the Iranian Parliament.

Meeting with a group of China-based Iranians and the Iranian embassy staff as well as attending a televised interview with the Chinese Phoenix Channel and participating in a press conference are major parts of Rahimi's agenda during his stay in China.
