Iran Tops Most Well-Attended AFC Matches

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian giants Persepolis and Esteqlal have attracted the most number of spectators to the AFC Champions League 2009 matches, the AFC website reported.

Persepolis' 3-1 victory over Sharjah on March 10 at the cavernous Azadi Stadium was watched by 55,000 fans, the highest attendance at an AFC match so far, press tv reported on Friday.

More than 53,000 fans turned out again for Persepolis's 3-1 win over Gharafa of Qatar on April 8.

The third well-attended match was between Esteqlal and Jazira of the UAE, again at the Azadi Stadium, on March 18. More than 40,000 fans went to the stadium to see the game, which ended in a 1-1 draw.

AFC said that the top quality on-pitch action resulted in the increase in the number of spectators thronging the stadiums.

A total of 686,875 spectators attended 70 matches in the group stage five rounds in the 2008 edition, while this year, 903,493 fans have packed the stadiums on the match days to date.

In 2008, the average attendance per match stood at 8,893 spectators per match, but 2009 saw a leap of 22% in the average attendance.
