Remembering WWII - After 60 Years

This year marks the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II.  Fought primarily in two theaters - Europe and the Pacific - the global conflict led to the deaths of 50 million people. 

While the war against Hitler's forces in Europe ended on May 8, it was not until the United States dropped the atomic bombs on Hiroshima (6 August) and Nagasaki (9 August) that the war in the Pacific came to a close on VJ Day - or Victory over Japan - on 15 August 1945.

Japan does not seem to have officially come to grips with its role in World War II, as clashes between it and neighbors, as well as veterans and today’s youth attest
