Iran Arrests 3 Iraqi Nationals for Smuggling Weapons

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iran declared on Saturday that it has arrested three Iraqi weapons smugglers in Arvandkenar district in the southwestern province of Khuzestan.

"Three weapons smugglers, all of whom claim to be of Iraqi nationality, have been arrested in the Arvand Kenar district," Yadollah Sharafi, a local navy commander said.

Sharafi said the Iraqis first raised suspicion of river police when their speedboat trespassed on Iran's territorial waters in the Arvand River.

"They were held for inquiries and subsequently found to be weapons smugglers," said Sharafi, adding that a cache of 49 different weapons have been also been discovered.

Iran's Arvandkenar is located some 200 meters from the Iraqi port city of Faw.
