Iran Views Defense Ties with Syria as Deterrent to Israel

TEHRAN (FNA)- The defense ties between Iran and Syria serve as a deterrent to Israeli threats, Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi stressed on Wednesday.

"Strengthening the defense ties between Iran and Syria is an elements of deterrence in the confrontation against the Zionist regime's threats to the regional countries," Vahidi said, addressing the first round of Iran-Syria supreme joint defense commission co-chaired by Syrian Defense Minister Lieutenant General Ali Habib.

Referring to the developing trend of defense relations between the two countries, Vahidi pointed out, "Today a new power pole is being formed in the world which secures the independence, freedom and interests of the nations and Iran and Syria play a unique and very good role in this process."

Vahidi also viewed Iran and Syria as strategic allies in establishing tranquility and stability in the region, and stressed that the two countries' responsibility for consolidating and strengthening security in the region indicates the importance of the cooperation between them.

The Iranian Defense Minister, heading a high-ranking delegation, arrived in Damascus Tuesday night to confer with Syrian officials on regional and international developments and mutual defense cooperation.

The visit by Vahidi takes place at an official invitation by his Syrian counterpart.

During the three-day visit, the Iranian General will also meet with other political and military officials of Syria.
