"After receiving the word that their drug-laden caravan was passing through the district of Kahnooj, we made it to the town and lay in ambush for them to show up," Local Police Deputy Alireza Parivar told FNA.
The police forces confronted the bandits and after that a five-hour-long crossfire started, Parivar added.
He also reiterated that the police forces managed to confiscate more drugs and arrest other members of the group after finding the hideout of the gang in the city of Rafsanjan.
Iran alone makes 85 percent of the world's total opium seizures.
During the past Iranian year (ended on March 20,) Iran seized more than 1,000 tons of opium smuggled from Afghanistan, the largest producer of opium poppy in the world.
The crackdown has cost Iran more than 600 million dollars over the past two years. Strategies pursued by Tehran include digging canals, building barriers and installing barbed wire to seal the country's borders, specially in the East.
