Paris to Host 2010 Shahnameh Millennium

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iran's Ferdowsi Foundation has announced its programs for the 2010 Shahnameh millennium ceremony, due to be held in Paris.

"A ceremony will be held at the Paris UNESCO headquarters on March 16," Secretary General of the foundation Yaser Movahhedfar said.

"We also plan to hold a cultural week during the Persian New Year [Nowruz] celebrations," he added.

Shahnameh (Book of Kings) is a classic among epic Persian poetry and recounts Iran's mythical and historical past. It was written in Persian at a time when Arabic was the main scientific and literary language of Iran, press tv reported.

The romance of Zal and Rudaba, the Seven Stages (or Labors) of Rostam, Rostam and Sohrab, Siavash and Soudabeh, Rostam and Akvan Div, the romance of Bizhan and Manizheh and Rostam and Esfandyar are among the most popular Shahnameh stories.

According to Movahhedfar, the Shahnameh millennium ceremony will gather experts to compile the first encyclopedia of Ferdowsi's masterpiece and establish a hall in the name of forty Iranian luminaries in the UNESCO headquarters.

A Ferdowsi statue will also be installed and an exhibition will be held to display works created based on the Shahnameh.

"Musical performances, tea-house painting exhibition, Persian storytelling and the traditional Zurkhaneh sports performances are also among the intended programs," Movahhedfar said.

Visitors will also have the chance to get a series of computer games based on the central theme of Shahnameh stories.
