He graduated magna cum laude from Abilene Christian University in May 2000, earning degrees in political science and religious studies, with a minor in public service. During his four years at Vanderbilt he spent a summer as the ministry staff leader for A Christian Ministry in the National Parks at Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Tennessee, and another as an intern with the Becket Fund for Religious Liberties, a public-interest law firm in Washington, D.C.
After receiving his law degree and a master's degree in theological studies in May 2004, Roland joined the Institute for Justice, another public-interest law firm in Washington.
