The Video Game Release List of 11/6 - 11/12

Nov 06, 2010 2:00pm CST tags: Release List

I think some sort of Call of Duty game comes out this week... it'll probably be fairly popular. That's pretty much it for this week save a few counter-programmed titled like FlingSmash and The Sly Collection.

Are you getting Black Ops?

If you're looking for a particular system, skip right to the PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii, Nintendo DS and PSP sections or just click through to see the whole list.

Weekend Discussion

Nov 06, 2010 10:00am CST
So, Kinect and Move are in stores now. Clearly you own both units and have a hard time figuring out which games to play.

If you're looking for realism, I'm going to have to suggest you stay away from both EyePet and Kinectimals. Now, I'm not saying those aren't good games, but they will not prepare you for any real-life scenario.

If you meet a real tiger, it--or one of its jerk buddies--will maul and kill you. If you meet that alien EyePet thing, it's going to "phone home" and its entire race is going to enslave us all.

Basically what I'm saying is stick with Sonic Free Riders. Hedgehogs aren't real.
You'll be fine.

  • Alice O'Connor: Whatever I'm told to. Flip Nick.
  • Brian Leahy: I'll be playing some more Fable III, Halo: Reach, and StarCraft II, but I'm sure most of my weekend will be eaten up by watching some eSports.
  • Garnett Lee: After watching Xav's stream last weekend and reading his review I want to play 007: Blood Stone this weekend. Vanquish is also there, beckoning me to play. And I continue to work through Battlestar Galactica. I'm at end of season 2.0 and enjoying it as much as I thought I would when I felt like I was missing out by not keeping up with it back when it aired. Netflix HD streaming for the win!
  • Xav de Matos: Castlevania: Lords of Shadow and Demon's Souls have been sitting on my desk looking lonely all week. Giving those a spin. Also, more Modern Warfare 2 on PC. (Note: Still not good on PC.)
  • Jeff Mattas: I'll be maxing out my "stab-o-meter" in Assassin's Creed Brotherhood. When in Rome, amirite?

Field Report - Killzone 3 Beta (Part Two)

Nov 05, 2010 6:00pm CST tags: Killzone 3, Preview, Field Report
After spending time with the Killzone 3 beta for a number of days, I became obsessed with grinding and crafting my favorite classes. Unlike Killzone 2, the third installment of the FPS from Guerrilla includes five classes--Killzone 2 had seven--with a number of unlockable abilities I actually cared about.

Part of that is the fact that Killzone 3 controls much better than its predecessor.

In part one of the Killzone 3 Beta Field Report I looked at the modes, maps, and how the bots stacked up in the multiplayer beta. In the second (and final) installment of the preview, I'm taking a look at each of the multiplayer mode's classes... Read more

Infinity Blade Trailer Reveals Gameplay, Graphics

Nov 05, 2010 5:20pm CST tags: Infinity Blade, Trailer, iOS, App Store
Infinity Blade, the new action-RPG from ChAIR Entertainment and Epic Games, uses Unreal Engine 3 and runs on iOS devices. It looks amazing, but what about the gameplay?

This debut trailer shows off some battles with fantasy foes using swipes to strike. It also shows off an experience system, which generates points that are exchanged for items and upgrades. The live gameplay segments do seem to sport a bit of a framerate drop from the direct-feed, but we'll see for ourselves when the game hits the App Store later this year.

NAME Microsoft unleashed the Kinect sensor add-on that brings controller-less play to the Xbox 360 and we've been playing with it and the first batch of games. But Dance Central, Kinect Adventures, and Kinect Sports aren't the only thing in Whatcha' Been Playin? The GoldenEye remake for Wii, Z.H.P., Fable 3, and more get in on the act as well. Your thoughts on videogame length, achievement systems, and the concepts of universal design spur the conversation in the Warning. Star Wars: The Old Republic Media Shows PvP Action in "Warzones"

Nov 05, 2010 1:30pm CST tags: Star Wars: The Old Republic, Trailer, Screenshots
New media from BioWare's upcoming MMORPG Star Wars: The Old Republic shows off some player-versus-player action in arenas called Warzones, which pit two sides against each other in what looks like an attack/defense scenario involving several objectives.

You'll see a mix of Jedi business and laser-blasting. While this doesn't quite sell me on the game, it's getting closer to something I'd play. In actuality, it just makes me want a new full-scale Star Wars multiplayer shooter on PC.

Darkspore Player vs. Player Multiplayer Preview

Nov 05, 2010 1:00pm CST tags: Darkspore, Preview
A few weeks ago, I had a chance to play some player-versus-player (PvP) combat in EA and Maxis' Darkspore. PvP combat will take place in arenas and Maxis will offer matchmaking, player rating, and leaderboards for the game.

If you're unfamiliar with Darkspore, get up to speed with our Darkspore preview of the game's campaign component. It's basically a Diablo-esque dungeon-crawler which uses some technology from Spore.

Each player brings a set of three characters into battle. The contest then becomes juggling each of your character's life, energy, and abilities as you fight to eliminate all three of the enemy's baddies. Switching between characters comes with a lengthy cooldown, but it also breaks any crowd-control effects, adding some depth.

I squared off against one of the developers and the match quickly got intense. Since each creature provides a global ability, skill combos can be quite powerful... Read more

Square Enix Reports Profit Drop as Key Franchises Continue to Sell Over Time

Nov 05, 2010 12:30pm CST tags: Square Enix, Earnings
Since we've become some fans of financial reports, we were giddy when we noticed Square Enix released [PDF link] its earnings for the six-month period between April and September 2010.

In that period, the Japanese development and publishing giant reported net income of ¥1.723 billion ($21.4 million) versus ¥2.68B ($33.1M)--a 35.7 percent drop over the same period a year ago.

According to the report, net sales were below forcasts; however operating income was higher than expected due to "highly profitable carryover sales" of major titles released in March 2010. What was the big winner in March for Square Enix? Final Fantasy XIII, which sold over five million units globally during the last reported period [PDF].

In the six-month period (ending September 30), Square Enix released five major titles to market with varying levels of success: Dragon Quest Monsters - Joker 2 for the Nintendo DS led, selling 1.28M units in Japan; Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days sold 560 thousand (K) units worldwide; Final Fantasy XIV on PC sold 630K units worldwide since launching on September 21 in Japan; and Just Cause 2 sold 560K worldwide between April and September after launching at the end of March...
