A just and democratic society in which human rights, dignity and fundamental freedoms are respected, promoted and protected.

 

Mission:

The mission of the Southern Sudan Human Rights Commission is its constitutional mandate which is the promotion and protection of the human rights and fundamental freedoms of the people of Southern Sudan as enshrined in the Bill of Rights in the ICSS as well as the international human rights treaties and conventions ratified by the Republic of Sudan.

Functions:

 

The Southern Sudan Human Rights Commission performs the following functions and duties:

 

  1. Monitor the application and enforcement of the rights and freedoms enshrined in the Constitution;
  2. Investigate complaints made by any person or group involving human rights violations;
  3. Visit jails, prisons and other places of detention with the view of assessing and inspecting conditions of the inmates and make recommendations to the relevant authorities;
  4. Establish a continuing research programme, education and information to enhance respect for human rights;
  5. Educate and encourage the public to defend human rights;
  6. Monitor the compliance of all levels of government in Southern Sudan with the international and regional human rights treaties ratified by the government.

 

Structure:

 

 

 

Projects and Programs: 

 

  1. Establishment of States' human rights offices to enable the Commission to be easily accessed by the communities in all the states;
  2. Conduct massive human rights education and awareness in the states;
  3. Conduct civic and voters' education throughout the ten states of Southern Sudan;
  4. Systematically monitor the state of human rights in all the states of Southern Sudan; and
  5. Identify and monitor thematic human rights issues in all the ten states of Southern Sudan.
