Ministry's Mission:

Formulate necessary legislation and regulation for the management and development of the energy and mining sectors as well as develop and implement GOSS policies and strategies on power generation and distribution.

Functions:

The Ministry of Petroleum and Mining performs the following functions and duties:

1. Formulate necessary legislation and regulation for the management and development of the energy and mining sectors of Southern Sudan;
2. Develop and implement GoSS policies and strategies on power generation and distribution, industrial development, and mining;
3. Organize and identify the energy potential of Southern Sudan in order to facilitate economic growth;
4. Identify all sources of hydro-power and other sources of renewable energy and facilitate their exploitation for electricity generation;
5. Plan electricity power supply schemes and oversee their implementation and operational management;
6. Identify potential commercial partners to develop and run electricity generation schemes in Southern Sudan;
7. Oversee the operation and management of the Southern Sudan Electricity Corporation to ensure it performs its functions as laid out in the relevant Act;
8. Set electricity tariffs for the sale of electricity to customers;
9. Regulate the exploitation of minerals, oil and other fossil fuels;
10. Supervise geological surveys;
11. Coordinate with Government of National Unity on matters concerning oil and other mineral exploration and exploitation on behalf of GoSS;
12. Monitor the activities of commercial enterprises involved in the exploration for and exploitation of oil and other mineral resources of Southern Sudan to ensure compliance with relevant regulations; and
13. Provide technical assistance, training and other capacity building to state governments and other local governments to build their capacity to assume their responsibilities for energy and mining maters as defined in the Constitution and GoSS policy.
