Since chitosan is a non-toxic polysaccharide, the synthesized nano hydrogel can also be used for drug delivery purposes.
The research was carried out in the University of Mazandaran by Dr. Mousa Qae'mi, a member of the Scientific Board of the university, and Ms. Motahhareh Nasseri. In this research, nano hydrogels with chitosan network were synthesized. In addition to their ability to carry drugs, the hydrogels can also be used in the purification of proteins in the presence of magnetic iron oxide.
"The research consisted of the following steps, respectively. The fabrication of network nano hydrogels by using chitosan and the two agents to form the network, studying the structure and determination of the percentage of the formed nano hydrogel, characterization and studying their application in drug delivery, and finally, protein separation and purification," Dr. Qaemi told the INIC's news network.
According to Dr. Qae'mi, chitosan nano hydrogels can be used for drug delivery purposes due to the non-toxicity of chitosan. The drug is released gradually taking into consideration the environmental situations, and chitosan non-toxic nano hydrogel is excreted.
Results of the research have been published on 15 October 2012 in Carbohydrate Polymers, vol. 90, issue 3. For more information, visit the full article on pages 1265-1272.
