Commander Sees Iran's Minesweeping Capability as Vital for Regional Peace

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iran is now among the few world countries with advanced minesweeping capabilities, Iranian Navy Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari said, stressing that this capability will boost security in the region since it blocks enemies' Iranophobia efforts.

The Iranian Navy staged a special minesweeping operation in Iran's Southern waters this morning, during which it unveiled and started using the country's first home-made minesweeping system.

The special minesweeping operation was conducted in waters East of the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

During the exercise, navy choppers defused naval mines using the home-made system.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the operation, Sayyari underlined the significance of the new minesweeping system, and stated, "This is a very important capability achieved by us in the Navy."

"Given the achievement, enemies (of Iran) can no more embark on actions such as mine planting in the region and (then) blame the Islamic Republic of Iran for it (mine planting)."

He added that Iran has proved that the regional countries can ensure security in the region, and that the presence of the trans-regional states in not needed.
