Iran's Top Trade Official, Chinese Xinjiang Delegation Meet in Mashhad

TEHRAN (FNA)- Vice-Chairman of Iran's Chamber of Commerce Gholam Hossein Shafeyee and a trade delegation from China's Xinjiang province explored avenues for closer trade ties between Iran's Northeastern province of Khorassan Razavi and Xinjiang.

During the meeting held in Iran's Northeastern holy city of Mashhad, Shafeyee pointed to a visit to Xinjiang by a delegation from Khorassan Razavi province, and called for the implementation of the agreements made between the two sides, including start of direct flights between the two regions.

"As the grounds are ready for economic cooperation between the two provinces, China's state authorities should pave the ground for the Iranian delegation's visit," he added.

He added that economic activists in Khorassan Razavi demand direct contact with Xinjiang's investment organization and establishment of a special desk for the Iranian province in Xinjiang's chamber of commerce.

China is Iran's top trade partner, with economic ties expanding in recent years after the withdrawal of Western companies in line with sanctions against the Islamic Republic over its peaceful nuclear program.

Trade between Iran and China in the past year was estimated at $45 billion.

Iran is currently China's third largest supplier of crude, providing Beijing with roughly 12 percent of its total annual oil consumption.
