UNDP Supports Efforts to Scale Up the National Statistical System in Sudan

The Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) organized on December 20th, the National Stakeholders Consultation Meeting at Grand Holiday Villa, Khartoum. The workshop was attended by various producers and users of statistical data in Sudan- representing central and state level institutions with the aim of policy level sensitization on roles and responsibilities of different actors in preparing the National Strategy for the Development of Statistics (NSDS).

Since the preparatory launch of the NSDS in October 31st, CBS and UNDP have been engaged in a series of consultations to encourage a more participatory approach in designing and implementing the NSDS for the socioeconomic development of Sudan.

In his welcoming remarks, UNDP Deputy Country Director Mr. Amin Sharkawi, asserted UNDP’s commitment to the preparation process of the NSDS to realize a well-functioning statistical system in Sudan “UNDP Sudan remains committed to assist in the formulation of a strategy for developing statistics; one that is nationally led and inclusive to all parties. A well functioning national statistical system is critical to the effective monitoring and evaluation of global development objectives such as the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), the human development situation and poverty reduction strategies. As knowledge based organization, statistical capacity development is one UNDP’s flagships,”

Director General of CBS, Dr. Yasin Alhag Abdin, stressed the importance of replicating this consultative meeting in other states to ensure active participation of all stakeholders for the formulation and implementation stages of the NSDS. He further called for additional political and financial commitment to this process, commending the role played by UNDP and partners in providing technical and financial support to the CBS.

In 2011, the CBS has embarked on the preparation of a national strategy for the development of statistics that will efficiently provide comprehensive reliable and timely statistics for the effective management of development outcomes and sound decision making in Sudan. The NSDS covers the entire national statistical system within Sudan. UNDP Sudan has provided both technical and financial support for the NSDS design process ensures that its support is aligned with national priorities and gaps.
