PhD Programs

Biosciences PhD Program

Spanning the School of Medicine and the School of Humanities and Sciences, the Biosciences PhD programs consist of 14 home programs, representing eight basic science departments and six interdisciplinary programs. Students join an initial program of interest to begin their studies, but are free to rotate across the labs of all programs to explore and pursue their research.

The Best of Both Worlds

The unique framework of the Biosciences' home programs gives students the best of both worlds: the diversity of a large umbrella program coupled with the support of a small academic setting.

Bioengineering PhD Program

Jointly supported by the School of Engineering and the School of Medicine, the bioengineering program merges engineering principles with scientific discovery and technology to encourage the development of new medical devices and treatments.

Stanford University School of Medicine consistently ranks among the top U.S. medical schools, and faculty members routinely secure the highest amount of research funding per investigator in the country.
