The Academic Services Office collaborates with students, faculty and staff in pursuing the Graduate School of Education’s mission. We strive to empower students on their own unique journeys, preparing them to fulfill their academic goals and reach their potential as educational leaders. To that end, the Office provides services and resources on policies and procedures regarding academic and student life programs and events, curriculum planning, financial aid, admissions, and outreach and recruitment.
Prof. Brown is a professor of teacher education. His research interest explores the relationship between student identity, discourse, classroom culture, and academic achievement in science education. Prof. Brown received his PhD and MA in Science Education from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and his BS in Biology from Hampton University. He has been a member of the Stanford Graduate School of Education faculty since 2003 and in 2015, was appointed Associate Dean for Students Affairs.
The Associate Dean oversees Academic Services, EdCareers, lecturer appointments, curriculum planning, faculty teaching assignments, academic program changes, TA and RA assignments and chairs the Area Chairs Committee and Undergraduate Committee.
Shu-Ling received a BA in Architecture & German from the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities, and a Ed.M. and Ed.D. in Administration, Planning and Social Policy from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Before joining the GSE in 2013, she was Assistant Dean at the Harvard Graduate School of Education for five years and the Director of Institutional Research at both the University of Massachusetts President’s Office and Bridgewater State University. Shu-Ling was also Interim Director of Student Affairs at the Harvard Graduate School of Education and the Assistant Dean of Students at Carleton College.
The Assistant Dean oversees student recruitment, admissions and financial aid, enrollment and degree progress for the School; develops strategic planning for these areas; supervises staff hiring and management/professional development processes; prepares School budgets and reporting; and creates and interprets academic policies.
Susana received a BA in Politics and Latin American and Latino Studies from U.C., Santa Cruz. After graduating, Susana worked with UCSC’s Early Academic Outreach Program providing college access workshops and programming for first generation college students, and continued this work at the Making Waves Education Program in San Francisco. Before joining Stanford, Susana worked at Penn Law’s Office of Admissions while earning her M.S.Ed in Higher Education from the University of Pennsylvania. In January 2011, Susana began her role as MA Officer and Credential Analyst for the Stanford Teacher Education Program. She was promoted to her current role in December 2013.
The Associate Director of Admissions and Financial Aid manages recruitment, diversity outreach & admissions processes for all graduate programs and visiting student researchers, administers prospective student financial aid, and assists the Associate Deans with planning and direction for the Academic Services team.
Viviana graduated from Stanford in 2007 with a BA in English and Spanish Literature. She then earned an MA in Comparative Literature from the University of California, Berkeley where she also taught undergraduate classes in foreign languages and writing. Before joining the GSE in February, 2014, Viviana was an Admission Officer in the Office of Undergraduate Admission at Stanford. Previously, Viviana worked in Williams College as an Admission Counselor and was a Program and Outreach intern with the Hispanic Scholarship Fund.
The STEP Program Officer and Credential Analyst advises prospective and current teacher candidates on pre-requisites for coursework, financial aid and degree progress, provides statistical data and reports for internal and external use, and manages recruitment and admissions processes for STEP.
Tommy has professional experience - both domestic and international - in higher education administration, language arts education, and training. His interests lie in higher education administration, youth development, training and coaching, diversity recruitment, and consulting. He holds a MA in International Comparative Education from Stanford University and a BA in English Literature specializing in Writing from New York University. Tommy joined the Academic Services team in his current role in 2014.
The Enrollment and Data Reporting Officer oversees the administration and system management of course planning for the Graduate School of Education, acting as a resource and working in conjunction with faculty and staff to design course schedules and resolve complex issues. Duties also include appointment processes for visiting faculty and lecturers, supervision of students assistants, and facilitation of data collection and analysis projects.
Grace received her BA from Cornell University in Psychology. She then completed a research fellowship at the Yale Child Study Center’s Toddler Autism Clinic, before coming to Stanford to earn her MA in Education. Grace has since taught elementary school in the Bay Area, and most recently, in Tokyo. In the fall of 2014, Grace returned to the GSE to work as the current Admissions and Academic Services Specialist.
The Admissions and Academic Services Specialist assists the Associate Director with admissions and recruitment, works with prospective applicants, answers queries, coordinates the visiting scholar appointment process, manages faculty area meeting administration, maintains the admissions website, and serves as the main point of contact for all Academic Services event planning, including Admit Days and Commencement.
Annie was born and raised in California. She started working at Stanford in April, 1980. Annie completed her BA in Sociology at San Jose State University. She’s lived all over California and enjoys cats, chocolate and books.
The Academic Services Administrator provides administrative support to Academic Services and assists with event planning.
Kate received her BA from the University of Richmond, majoring in Economics and German. Before coming to Stanford, she completed a Fulbright grant in Germany and later worked in the Office of Student Life at Randolph-Macon College in Virginia. Kate interned in the Overseas Resource Center at Stanford’s Bechtel International Center while earning a MA in the POLS program, and came back to work at the GSE in the fall of 2011 as our Admissions and Academic Services Specialist before being promoted to Doctoral Program Officer in 2013.
The Doctoral Program Officer manages doctoral student and postdoctoral fellow orientation, enrollment, degree progress, funding/assistantships and student groups.
Caroline received a BA in English and Native American Studies (with a minor in Education) from U.C. Davis in 2007; and is currently pursuing an MLA degree at Stanford. As an undergraduate, Caroline worked as a student advisor in UCD’s Internship & Career Center and served as the student coordinator for Native American Culture Days. After graduation, she moved to the bay area and worked in the Dean’s Office of the College of Applied Sciences & Arts at San Jose State University. She joined the Academic Services team at the GSE in 2010 as the Course Management Specialist, and was promoted to her current role in 2012.
The MA & UG Programs Officer manages master’s and undergraduate student enrollment, degree progress, fellowships, and events.
