To celebrate the 25th anniversary of Stanford's first NCAA women’s basketball championship in 1990 (the Cardinal won a second title in 1992), assistant university archivist Josh Schneider curated a small exhibit entitled “Home of Champions” in the Bender Room, Green Library.
Schneider showcased the history of women’s basketball at Stanford, from the first intercollegiate women’s game on the Pacific Coast in 1896 to the passage of Title IX and the rebirth of intercollegiate women’s basketball at Stanford. That first intercollegiate game pitted a Stanford team led by Captain Stella McCray against a team from the University of California. Stanford won 2-1. No men were allowed to attend.
