Stephen Barley PhotoStephen Barley's research focuses on the social and organizational implications of technological change and on the technical and professional workforce. His book, Gurus, Hired Guns and Warm Bodies, (Princeton University Press, co-authored with Gideon Kunda) is an ethnography that documents the experiences of software developers, technical writers, IT experts and other technical professionals who have left full-time employment to become freelance contractors. Barley was co-chair for the National Research Council and the National Academy of Science's committee on the changing occupational structure in the United States, which published The Changing Nature of Work in 1999.
