Grant information

FLAS fellowships, authorized under Title VI of the Higher Education Act and administered by the US Department of Education, provide undergraduate grantees $10,000 in tuition support and a $5,000 stipend for one academic year. The fellowship is intended for undergraduates of any major undergoing advanced training in designated foreign languages at Stanford: Russian, Ukrainian, Romanian, Kazakh, Polish, Czech, Serbo-Croatian, Turkish, or Hungarian.

The term of the fellowship is for one academic year or less. Applicants may re-apply each year. The selection of awardees is made annually by the CREEES fellowship committee, which favors candidates who have not previously received FLAS support. CREEES awards one such fellowship each year.

To be considered for a Stanford academic-year FLAS fellowship in REEES languages, an applicant must:

  • Be a US citizen, permanent resident, or green card holder.
  • Apply for Stanford financial aid by the deadline for the current academic year and qualify for at least $15,000 in demonstrated need. (The FLAS fellowship will usually replace loans and/or work study or in some other way be to the student's financial benefit).
  • Enroll in the REEES language course at the second-year or higher (literature and directed reading courses do not qualify). Awardees will take a minimum of 3 units in the grant language for each of the three academic quarters. Language courses must be taken for a letter grade and at the appropriate level, as determined by the Stanford Language Center.
  • Enroll each academic quarter of the FLAS award period in an area studies or international studies course
  • Be enrolled for the entire award period in full-time study, as defined by the University, without employment or research for which payment is received, unless it can be shown that the employment is part of the student's degree-earning requirements and does not prolong the time normally required for completion of University requirements.

The Academic Year 2016-2017 FLAS Fellowship competition is open. Deadline: May 19, 2016.
