Editorial Reviews

Review

“An inspirational read that not only demonstrates the power of compassion, but also reveals how kindness and self-compassion are within our reach.”--Kelly McGonigal, author, The Upside of Stress and The Willpower Instinct

“Embracing compassion enables us to step into our own natural capacity for creativity and empathy.  I highly recommend this extraordinary book and this path to anyone who seeks to have more meaningful connections to people and the world.”--David Kelley, Founder of IDEO, co-author, Creative Confidence: Unleashing the Creative Potential Within Us All

A Fearless Heart is a rare book that shows how the meeting of contemplative insights and practices with modern science can lead to offerings that are beneficial for everyone interested in deeper personal spiritual transformation. The book shows how such practices can have positive impact in our daily lives. I applaud my long-time English translator Thupten Jinpa for writing this timely book on compassion and its cultivation.”--His Holiness the Dalai Lama

“I love Jinpa’s sense of the practical, of bringing compassion down from the pedestal of high ideals and into the messy reality that is every day human life.  A Fearless Heart may prove to be one of the important books of these difficult times.”--Richard Gere

"Brilliantly clear and heartfelt, a potentially life changing work offering inspiring training. A Fearless Heart is personally moving, eminently practical and visionary in scope."--Jack Kornfield, author, The Wise Heart

“Jinpa shows why compassion is not a given within some yet not possible for others, but rather is a quality of the heart that we all can cultivate and expand. If we do that, our lives transform, our families and relationships transform, and our world transforms.”--Sharon Salzberg, author of Loving Kindness and Real Happiness

“Firmly grounded in the latest scientific studies, and hugely invitational and convincing in its inspiration, its reasoning, its heartfulness, and its guidance in a broad range of powerful practices, A Fearless Heart is the bravest, clearest, and most engaging book I know on why we need to cultivate compassion, and on how to bring it more widely and deeply into our lives and into the world.”
--Jon Kabat-Zinn  Founder of Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction; Author of Full Catastrophe Living

“Thupten Jinpa speaks from his expertise as a monk turned family man, and a topflight scholar, who draws on his remarkable background and range of knowledge to offer each one of us a practical tool kit for becoming a better human being. A Fearless Heart can help anyone nurture the compassion that lies within every heart.”--Daniel Goleman, author, Emotional Intelligence

“Part autobiography, part a training manual for a wholesome life and part a beautiful tapestry woven between ancient Buddhist thought and modern science, this book has something for everyone.  At its fundamental core, it makes the case for why compassion is so essential for the modern world and offers detailed helpful advice on how it can be cultivated.”--Richard J. Davidson, co-author, The Emotional Life of Your Brain, Founder, Center for Investigating Healthy Minds, University of Wisconsin-Madison

(I had received a prepublication copy, and recently interviewed the author. The book
publicly became available today).
After 35 years of being a psychotherapist, this is now my favorite book to recommend to
clients, colleagues, family and friends. Jinpa has been drinking from the deep wells of
Tibetan Buddhism for his whole life, and has been transporting it to the West via the Dalai Lama's
teachings for nearly 30 years. Now, in A Fearless Heart, integrating this wisdom with recent studies
about compassion from western science and with lively examples from his own life, his writing
arrives like powerful waves that we need to wake up to greater compassion and
kindness, for ourselves as well as for all. I am grateful for this book and its meditation suggestions,
and will be re-reading and working with its richness and depth for many years.

By Isa Gucciardi, Ph.D.

Dr. Thupten Jinpa’s new book, A Fearless Heart: How the Courage to be Compassionate Can Transform our Lives, is a very important new book. For those of you who may think you do not know who Thupten Jinpa is, you probably have met him without realizing it. He has been His Holiness, the Dalai Lama’s principle English language interpreter and translator since 1987. A former Tibetan Buddhist monk, he holds a PhD from Cambridge University. He is an adjunct professor of religious studies at McGill University and chairman of the Mind and Life Institute. He is well known in Tibetan Buddhist circles; several monasteries recognized him as an incarnation of one of their great teachers but Jinpa never took on the mantle of tulku, or incarnation lama. He is famous for his achievements in the complex form of debate that is the core form of scholarship in Tibetan Buddhist education.

Jinpa is the author of many books and articles and he has translated countless scholarly texts from Tibetan to English, but this is the first time he has written a book on concepts of Tibetan Buddhism for lay people. With this book, Jinpa (as he likes to be called), steps out of the relative shadow where he has remained for many westerners.

A Fearless Heart is both accessible and profound at once. This is not surprising, because this is very much how Jinpa himself is. In this book he weaves together the latest in neuroscience with personal anecdotes about his own struggles to become more a compassionate being.

He outlines experiments, many of which he designed himself with the development of the Compassion Cultivation Training protocol at Stanford University over the last 8 years.

"A Fearless Heart: How the Courage to be Compassionate Can Transform Our Lives" is one of the most cogent articulations of the importance of compassion practice available. Jinpa weaves the science of compassion study with traditional Tibetan Buddhist teachings and stories from his life as a refugee, young monk, father, husband, and thirty years as the Dalai Lama’s English interpreter and translator. He draws on his experience as a Visiting Research Scholar at Stanford University and his education at a monastery and later Cambridge University to ground his immense knowledge into a book that is easy to read. With “A Fearless Heart”, Jinpa has produced an important work filled with practical wisdom and practices we can apply in our own lives to create greater happiness and compassion.

This book has really made me think about my intention on a daily basis. I am trying to put more compassion out into the world including toward myself (a major theme of this book) and the practices the author teaches you as you read along are amazing for assisting those of us who need it the direction in which to go. The breathing exercises, the what I would call positive affirmations....it's all very useful and presented in a very accessible way. You don't feel like your reading the thoughts of a Lama who is many light years more evolved than you can ever hope to be but at the same time the authors voice is clearly of someone who knows his s***.

I received a prepublication copy and then also bought the audio. This is a beautiful book of stories, wisdom, and science. Your heart literally grows as you read it. Thupten Jinpa has not only spent thirty years learning from and interpreting from the Dalai Lama, he is also a scholar in his own right and a student of science. He is immersed in the Western world in a way that the Dalai Lama never will be, as a householder and academic, and he joins these two worlds together with grace and insight. What a gift this book is. It will help many.

This book was hard to put down! I had intended to read it this summer as work began to slow down, but it grabbed me from the first page. The author gives us a glimpse into his own personal life experiences and I was fascinated! The theory that is presented is easy to read and equally fascinating. Throughout the book the author offers readers several practical exercises to try in order to develop one's own contemplative practice and truly develop and embrace compassion. I loved the chapter on Caring for Ourselves! How often we forget as humans to be compassionate towards ourselves. As an educator I felt inspired by the chapter, The Power of One: The Way to a More Compassionate world. I really appreciated how the author describes re envisioning how we educate our children. This book will truly guide you to a better understanding of WHY and HOW to cultivate compassion! I highly recommend this book!!!!
