Michael McFaul is the Peter and Helen Bing Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution, where he co-directs the Iran Democracy Project. He is the former U.S. ambassador to Russia, where he became well known for his digital diplomacy through his use of Twitter. McFaul's current research interests include democracy promotion, comparative democratization, and the relationship between political and economic reform in the postcommunist world. McFaul is also the former director of the Center on Democracy, Development, and the Rule of Law and deputy director of the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies, and a recipient of a Rhodes scholarship.
