Stanford Parking & Transportation Services’ (P&TS) goal is to make sure people and goods can travel to, from and within the campus in an environmentally sustainable and efficient way. P&TS seeks to reduce transportation-related pollution and emissions, as well as traffic-related impacts on land use and our neighboring communities.

Stanford’s Transportation Demand Management (TDM) program is one of the most comprehensive in the country. Operated through Parking and Transportation Services (P&TS), the program aims to reduce university-related traffic impacts, emissions, and parking demand. Stanford developed the program to meet peak-trip reduction goals outlined in the General Use Permit issued by the County of Santa Clara, which governs campus growth and development. 

Since the beginning of Stanford's TDM program in 2002, the percentage of Stanford employees driving alone to campus has dropped from 72% to 49%, and allowed Stanford to consistently meet its goals for “no new net commute trips.” Learn more about ongoing initiatives.

  • Ridership of the Marguerite free shuttle has reached 3.2 million passengers annually.
  • Bike to Work Day participants logged nearly 1,000 more miles compared to last year, reducing approximately 7,567 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions.
  • With the opening of Roble Field Garage, Stanford’s campus gained 54 new electric vehicle charging stations, for a total of 80 ports on campus and on Porter Drive.
  • Vanpools now enjoy a 100% subsidy and continue to enjoy free vanpool parking.
  • Free and discounted transit offerings include the Caltrain Go Pass, VTA Eco Pass, and Line U East Bay Express. Pre-tax payroll deductions can cover parking at transit and passes for all other Bay Area transit. This year, nearly 22,000 Caltrain Go Passes were distributed to the campus community.
  • The Marguerite shuttle fleet includes 5 diesel-electric hybrid buses and 23 all-electric buses, with an additional 18 all-electric buses on order for delivery in 2017. P&TS is working on plans to fully electrify its fleet as current vehicles are retired. All Marguerite vehicles are equipped with bicycle racks.
  • Stanford continues to be recognized with two consecutive Platinum Bicycle Friendly University designations from the League of American Bicyclists.
  • Stanford expanded its Zipcar fleet to more than 67 cars at 33 locations in 2016-17, maintaining the distinction of being the largest university Zipcar fleet in the United States.
  • In 2016, the number of Commute Club members increased to over 10,000 with the addition of nearly 550 new commuters in the Commute Club, an incentive program for sustainable commuters.
  • In addition to bi-annual prizes for Commute Club members, Stanford commuters participated in two promotional contests in 2016. In the “Heart and Art of your Commute,” employees submitted photography, artwork and poetry inspired by their commutes. Winners received gift cards and recognition in an online gallery. The “Mix and Match Your Commute” Game encouraged departments to work together in a Bingo-style online game to complete commute-related actions. Winning departments were awarded food truck parties.
