The Loma Prieta earthquake rocked the campus on Oct. 17, 1989. While some buildings were damaged beyond repair, no one on the Stanford campus was seriously injured. Stanford Report chronicled the quake and its aftermath.

Unraveling mysteries of gym's demise in quake

Through an excavation project of the men's gymnasium that was destroyed by the 1906 earthquake, university archaeologist Laura Jones' team has unearthed evidence suggesting why the newly complete building collapsed so spectacularly while so many other structures survived the violent temblor.
