SSRL Experimental Run Schedule

The FY2019 SPEAR Operating Schedule is posted for users to review plans for operations, maintenance/accelerator physics, holidays and other down times next year. The FY2019 user schedule for the first cycle, late October 2018 through late January 2019, will be posted shortly.
To request X-ray/VUV beam time for the February-April 2019 cycle, submt beam time requests through the user portal by November 3. Submit macromolecular crystallography beam time requests by January 14 for March-May scheduling.
A rating of ~1.5 is generally the initial cut off for beam time on most SSRL beam lines which are oversubscribed. Additional requests may be accommodated to fill cancelled beam time. Log into the user portal to view beam time assignments and submit feedback from your experiences last year.
The FY2018 SSRL run year, which began in October 2017, ended on July 23, 2018. SSRL beam lines were shutdown during these scheduled breaks in FY2018:  February 26-March 5, 2018, May 29-June 4, 2018, and July 4, 2018. SSRL shutdown for facility maintenance and upgrades July 23, 2018 through late October 2018 when the FY2019 user run will resume. This past year, we scheduled 1,959 experiments out of the 2,608 beam time requests submitted.

Most beam lines officially turn over to the next user before 3 pm, but usually it is much earlier in the day depending on equipment requirements and staff availability. Plan to arrive early in the morning to assist beam line staff who may have questions about your set up and to complete safety training.

Contact the designated beam line engineer/scientist at least one week prior to arrival to discuss beam line configuration needs and to confirm your estimated start time.

All users must be registered on the SSRL/LCLS user portal and be listed on a scheduled proposal to access SLAC (review procedures).

BRING ORIGINAL IDENTIFICATION DOCUMENTS WHEN VISITING the SLAC SUSB VUE Center and Security Badging Office to obtain an ID badge or renew access. This is required at the start of each run year (October-September).

Please note these upcoming deadlines to submit beam time requests, new proposals, or proposal extensions:

NOTE NEW DEADLINES Submit new X-ray/VUV proposals or extension requests by MAY 1, AUGUST 1, NOVEMBER 1.

  • X-ray/VUV beam time requests for October-January due August 8.
  • Macromolecular Crystallography beam time requests for October-January due August 29.
  • X-ray/VUV proposals/extension requests due November 1.
  • Macromolecular Crystallography proposals/extension requests due December 1.
