Use a Password Manager

Update: August 1, 2018:

After a thorough review of features and user experience, the Information Security Office has selected Dashlane as the preferred password manager. Beginning in late summer, University IT will offer Dashlane Premium plans to all university faculty, staff and students no cost. Password managers are applications that store your passwords securely and offer a mechanism for logging into websites without the need to remember all of your passwords. The Information Security Office has reviewed popular password managers and approved the use of LastPassDashlane, or Mac OS X Keychain for personal use.

Benefits of using a password manager

  • You do not have to remember all of your passwords.
  • You can have a unique and complex password for each account.
  • You have the option of using Autofill on forms or passwords.

Usage recommendations

Select a strong master password

Having a strong master password is essential to protecting your password file.

Enable two-factor authentication

All recommended password manager products support two-factor authentication. Two-factor authentication will go a long way toward securing your master password and protecting all of your passwords.

Create a unique and complex password

Use a complex and unique password for each account.


Password managers are not approved for Stanford privileged account credentials.
