This week the Preservation department welcomes our new staff member, Annie Matthys, to the position of Preservation Specialist. In her new position, Annie will handle preventive preservation tasks, including environmental monitoring, pest management, preservation education and maintenance of the collection emergency response plan, as well as department projects. She will be a primary point of contact for collection preservation issues.

Under a program established by The Stanford University Department of Public Safety, Public Access Stations (medical and trauma kits) have been installed at 35 locations across the Stanford Campus, one of which has been installed at Green Library at the Circulation and Privileges Desk, first floor.
A pilot project in the Music Library to digitize sheet music and make images available in the SearchWorks catalog has produced its first collection, made up of 140 piano arrangements and transcriptions. Basic records for these items have long been in SearchWorks, and are now greatly enhanced with access to the digital images and options for close examination and download. This collection was chosen for scanning because the paper is too brittle to withstand the handling that results from practice and performance.

Tiny books, x-rays, and ancient texts: a year as an intern at Stanford Libraries' Conservation Services
Michelle C. Smith will give a presentation on her final year of graduate school in the Buffalo State College Art Conservation Program. This will include her 2017 summer internship at the Bibliothèque nationale de France and her year spent working at Stanford Libraries' Conservation Services under Kristen St. John and David Brock.
