Important Information Regarding COVID-19

Enrolling in Courses

The course catalog and schedule of classes is presented at the Stanford Bulletin's ExploreCourses web site. (The Stanford Bulletin and the Time Schedule are no longer printed.) To enroll officially in classes for the quarter, you must:

  1. Clear any holds on your registration; holds on your registration may be viewed in Axess.

  2. Pay your tuition and fees; payment in full is due on the date indicated on the University Bill. See the Student Financial Services site for more information on payments.

  3. See your academic adviser to discuss your academic plans.

  4. Enroll in classes via Axess.

Keep in mind the following important considerations:

  • Undergraduates must enroll in 12-20 units during Autumn, Winter, and Spring quarters.

  • Graduate students must enroll during Autumn, Winter, and Spring quarters in at least 8 units or, if they have been approved for TGR or TMR status, they must enroll in a TGR or TMR course.

  • If you have not enrolled by the final study list deadline (Friday 5 pm of the third week of classes), your registration and financial assistance will be canceled.

You must be enrolled in courses, including TGR or TMR, in order to live in University housing.

Waitlists and Permission Numbers

Some classes have restricted enrollment. In some cases, a class may have a maximum number of students allowed. In other cases, a class may require the prior permission of the instructor for you to enroll.


If a class is full, you may be given the option when attempting to enroll of adding your name to a waitlist. When a place opens up in the class, Axess's enrollment engine places the first eligible student on the waitlist into the class automatically.

Waitlist eligibility (i.e., your eligibility to be added to the class) is based upon factors including time conflicts, holds, and maximum units:

  • If you have a time conflict (i.e., you are already enrolled in another class that wholly or partially overlaps with the class for which you are on the waitlist), you will be bypassed and the next eligible student will be added.

    • You can avoid this issue by designating a "drop if enrolled" class at the time when you enroll in the waitlist. If you have a "drop if enrolled" class designated, and you are otherwise eligible to be added to the class, you will be enrolled in the class for which you are on the waitlist and simultaneously dropped from the other designated class.

  • If enrolling in the class would take you above the maximum allowable units (i.e., 20 units for undergraduates), you will be bypassed and the next eligible student will be added.

  • If you have an enrollment hold, you will be bypassed and the next eligible student will be added. Contact the Student Services Center if you need information about a hold on your enrollment.

Permission Numbers

There are two methods by which an instructor or a designated administrator can give you permission to enroll in a class with restricted enrollment. This depends upon how the class was set up; only one method or the other is available if permission is required.

  • By number: Axess generates permission numbers which are given to you by a department administrator or instructor. You enter the permission number in Axess in order to be enrolled.


  • By student: A department administrator enters the student ID to grant permission; the student may then enroll.


COVID-19 Policy Change: Due to current health guidelines, no auditors are permitted to attend in-person classes. Remote auditing is available only to Stanford affiliates, who must complete and submit an Audit form.

Registered Stanford students may only audit a class with instructor approval. Others, including Stanford staff and faculty as well as non-Stanford-affiliated individuals, should consult the Stanford Bulletin for applicable policies.
