Harry's new competition!

Harry Habibi has been stealing the limelight for a while but he now has fierce competition in the form of Denzel...

Denzel was born last night at ACE - his mum has been in with us for a week now with a wound over her shoulder and an infected shoulder joint. We knew she was ready to drop soon but we were still pleasantly surprised to find a beautiful white baby donkey foal in her stable this morning!! He initially had difficulty standing up on his legs due to weak tendons so we have put on a support bandage on his worse leg, to stop it knuckling over every time he stands. This has worked well and he's now pottering around like a pro!

This is Denzel resting with mum in the stable.

Just what to say a BIG Thank you............

To Momen and his staff at "SNOBS" for their amazing support. SNOBS were the first local business to support ACE by handing out leaflets, raising funds and collecting much needed goods, such as towels etc. Below is a picture of Momen and his friendly staff.

Please help us by supporting him in return - we can highly recommend his food and service.

**** P L E A S E P L E A S E H E L P U S ****

I have just been informed that due to the recent flu outbreak in Luxor and the huge costs involved in treating all the cases we had in, ACE now, once again, only has two months money left in reserve.

This is a serious situation and we desperately need all thinking caps on as to how to raise money, and get us out of this hole.

For now, please send whatever you can, and tell everyone you know to do the same. Please email me with any other suggestions you have of ways we can raise funds. kimace56@hotmail.com

PLEASE GIVE WHAT YOU CAN .... GIVE UP THAT BOTTLE OF WINE AT DINNER AND GIVE US THE MONEY INSTEAD, CUT DOWN ON YOUR CIGARETTES AND DONATE TO US, HAVE A NON-UNIFORM DAY AT WORK, CONVINCE YOUR VETERINARIAN TO GIVE UP ONE DAYS WAGE TO US, DO A STRIPTEESE THROUGH YOUR LOCAL PARK!!! WE ARE DESPERATE HERE!!!!

Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Animal Care in Egypt gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation. So please DONATE NOW !

Harry is back!!!

Harry Habibi is indeed back at ACE - and sporting a new hairdo!!! His mum has a minor complication with her wound following the cesarean section so has had to return to the hospital for a few days of treatment. It is lovely to have Harry back but we do hope mum makes a speedy recovery!

We will keep you updated with pictures of Harry's antics and also check out the ACE pages on facebook for more pictures in the coming few days!

Punishment?

This mare came in after being involved in a road trafic accident - although she did not lose her ear in the accident. When we asked the owner what had happened to her ear, we were rather shocked - apparently, as a foal, the mare went to visit the next door neighbours field and had a light snack! To punish the horse for this behavious they removed the ear. There's still so much education to do!!!
She is recovering well from her accident however, she suffered a wound to her hind leg and suffered a joint infection. All is now nearly healed so once she's recovered and had a little rest we will send her home.

A Harry ending!!! (bad pun - sorry!!!)

Yesterday we sadly waved goodbye to possibly one of the most well known baby donkeys in the world - well not quite, but he was very popular! Yes, Harry Habibi has left the hospital with his new adopted mum who has now fully recovered from her Cesarean section. The owner was delighted to be allowed to take Harry home (we kept it a secret until he came to pick up Harry's mum as a surprise for him).

Even though we will miss having him around it is best for Harry to be with his new mum and be around donkeys as opposed to growing up at a hospital with no mother. He was quite depressed before we adopted him but after adoption his character completely changed to quite a cheeky one! We are sure Harry's owners will treat him well - his mother came to us in very good condition and was always very trusting to humans meaning she was very well looked after by her owners. We hope Harry will have a good life and finally realise he is a donkey!

BYE HARRY!!

Flu

FINALLY!!!we have a partially working internet connection and the computer is (occasionally) behaving so here is an update...
The influenza outbreak means we are being kept busy with a steady stream of cases, below is a picture of one little donkey that came in to us very sick, as the owner had left him in the field for a few days before bringing him in to us. Sadly, despite our efforts he was sadly put to sleep later in the night. If only he'd have come to see us sooner.

This poor dog came in a few days ago with a horrible wound to his throat - sadly the cause of the injury is the owner levaing him tied up for too long and too tightly!!!When will these injuries of ignorance be a thing of the past!!!????

And to top it all off the owner has not returned with the dog for any follow up treatment!!!Grrrrrrrr!!!

Apologies

We are very sorry for the lack of updates on the blog currently but we are experiencing problems with our internet connection and the computer. Luckily today I can write on the blog but it still wont let me upload any pictures, so pictures will follow ASAP!
We currently have another burns patient - this time a beautiful black stallion. Sadly he was the only one out of the whole stable yard that could get away - as he knew how to jump out. He has severe burns all over his body. Currently he is comfortable but the next 5-7days will be critical for him.
There is also another influenza outbreak here in Luxor. Luckily we are not seeing half as many as we did last year but on average we are seeing about 20 cases a day.
As i said, pictures will follow ASAP so thats all for now!

Harry is a cat!

Well he thinks he is a cat! His surrogate mum was unwell for a while and could not feed him so he decided to go back with his cat friends to see what he could get..... Mum is all better now and Harry is torn between the two....

Also picture of Katie Flint from the IEBWA which is the International Equine Body Workers Association, Katie has been volunteering at ACE helping our inpatients feel soooo much better. We would like to thank the IEBWA for their help and support of ACE.

Update

And this is what the two wounds mentioned in the previous post look like now……

Thursday, 22 January 2009

Update....

Remember the poor little donkey that came in looking like this which we then operated on to stitch everything back together?

We are pleased to say we are delighted with his progress. The wound is contracting and a healthy bed of tissue has covered the wound, ready for new skin to grow across.

However, we have sadly had another case come in with a similar injury and a similar story - pulling a cart that was too heavy and as a result the donkey slipped and injured himself on the cart he was pulling. We have had a spate of these wounds recently as currently they have just started to collect the sugar cane, a time of year when the donkeys work even harder and pull even heavier loads.

Hunt the nail!

The owner of this donkey, decided after three weeks of him being lame, to bring him in to us. We were a little perplexed what was causing his lameness as he was walking as if he'd broken his elbow! After finding nothing wrong with his elbow we had to look alsewhere so we started in the foot.

After taking an x- ray of the foot we could see a bright line in there which was a nail, however the nail was not visible from the outside anywhere, and we couldn't find a tract or point of entry!!

After taking many more xrays we finally located the nail and pulled it out - which was pretty small!
