Obama, the military and the threat of dictatorship: "With his choice of Admiral Dennis Blair as director of national intelligence, President-elect Barack Obama has now named three recently retired four-star military officers to serve in his cabinet. This unprecedented representation of the senior officer corps within the incoming Democratic administration is indicative of a growth in the political power of the US military that poses a serious threat to basic democratic rights.
As head of the US military’s Pacific command in 1999-2000, Blair was distinguished by his efforts to solidarize the Pentagon with the military of Indonesia as it carried out butchery in East Timor, effectively vetoing the half-hearted human rights concerns voiced by the Clinton administration."

Understanding isn’t the same as forgiving. The history-be-my-judge interviews that President Bush and Vice President Cheney have been giving recently help me understand why they acted with such contempt for our Constitution and our values—but also reinforce my confident belief, and my fervent hope, that history will throw the book at them.
The basic argument that they’re making deserves to be taken seriously. I don’t think either man would object to my summing it up in one sentence: We did what we did to keep America safe."

Attorney General Michael Mukasey since his appointment by George Bush, as have previous members of the Bush administration such as Alberto Gonzales, and other enablers such as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, has waffled, spun, twisted in the wind, squirmed, sweated, excused, equivocated, denied reality and otherwise insulted Americans and the entire world as evidence of torture ordered at the highest levels of the Bush administration has piled ever higher and higher.
No better than the public enemies he is protecting, Mr. Mukasey, like Ms. Pelosi, has become no better than a getaway car driver, no better than a fugitive from justice.
Torture is well defined, immoral, and illegal, in violation of international law, US law, and international treaties. There is no more heinous and downright evil and dehumanizing crime in the history of humanity than torture.
Any person guilty of torture under current US law can be incarcerated for up to 20 years or receive the death penalty if the torture results in the victim's death.
Mr. Mukasey, while holding office as the highest ranking officer of justice in the United States, is nothing more than an accessory to the crimes that George Bush, Dick Cheney and others have flagrantly engaged in.
Last week outgoing US Vice-President Dick Cheney made a series of remarkable comments in his exclusive interview with ABC attempting to save himself from prison with a blatant plea for pardon from his co-conspirator George Bush.
Michael Ratner, President of the Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR), explains Cheney's motives in a video interview with Real News CEO Paul Jay...
Cheney admitted to playing a role in the authorization of the use of waterboarding and other 'aggressive interrogation techniques', defended the decision to listen-in on domestic phone calls, and essentially provided broad approval for all the actions taken by his government over his tenure.
In the first part of our interview with Michael Ratner, Michael gives his analysis of both the significance of the interview, and what he believes are Cheney's motivations for such an uncharacteristic offering of information from the notoriously secretive VP.

If Mr. Holder, when he becomes Attorney General, is to live up to his own statements and retain the personal and professional integrity he has displayed in his law career thus far, and not by acts of omission become an accessory along with Mr. Mukasey and Ms. Pelosi to the crimes of Bush, Cheney and others in the Bush administration, he will have no choice but to accept the demands of the thousands of US citizens who have signed the Docudharma/Democrats.com Citizens Petition for a Special Prosecutor to investigate and prosecute Bush administration war crimes.
If he will not, Mr. Holder runs the risk of throwing away a lifetime of work in a so far illustrious career and all of his personal and professional integrity and becoming a fugitive with Mr. Mukasey and an accessory to these crimes along with and no better than the perpetrators and other conspirators.
Given his professional record, I have every confidence that Mr. Holder, as soon to be Attorney General of the United States, realizes that he can make no other choice than to do the right thing.
Mr. Holder knows. As Attorney General he will wear the badge as the highest ranking officer of justice in the United States.
He will have his own integrity on the line.
Mr. Holder knows that like any other accused criminals, Bush and Cheney deserve fair trials.
And Mr. Holder knows that failing to give them those fair trials would be convicting himself.
The petition was initially set up to relay every signer to Mr. Holders public e-mail address. Since it's formal launch yesterday, we are now at 1085 signers and growing. In response to AG Designates Holder's response, we have stopped sending him each signature and comment that appears on the petition and are now collecting all names and comments for eventual submission to AG Designate Holder, the media and members of Congress.
We have since asked Mr. Holder for a formal statement on the petition. We await it eagerly! But we now know that he is aware of the petition, aware of our concerns, and aware that there is a citizens movement aimed at bring Bushco to justice. In other words...it is working!

TACOMA — The forgery and theft case had victims, a witness and decent surveillance images from an ATM. What it didn't have were leads on who committed the crime.
But the ATM images — instead of being tossed aside, as happens in so many property-crime cases — were e-mailed to Steve Wilkins at the Pierce County Sheriff's Department.
Wilkins, the department's forensic-services supervisor, picked the clearest one and used new facial-recognition software to compare it to 16 years' worth of prisoner mug shots taken at the Pierce County Jail. Within 15 minutes he'd found a match.
Detectives followed the new lead and eventually arrested Susan Bennett, who was charged in October with 11 crimes in connection with the ATM thefts. She pleaded guilty Dec. 11 and was sentenced to 9 ½ years.
The match was the first for the sheriff's department's six-month pilot project with Sagem Morpho Inc.'s new facial- recognition software, MorphoFace.
The computer program runs with Hollywood-like ease and, with a click of a button, compares a suspect's image to a database of thousands of known Pierce County offenders.
"It's really cool," said Wilkins.
Detectives and Tacoma-Pierce County Crime Stoppers officials are revisiting unsolved bank robberies, ATM scams and other crimes that have good surveillance images to see whether the program can crack the cases.

On social networking website Facebook, a group has been created called "Noz Zica Srebrenica" which means "The Knife The Wire Srebrenica". This group glorifies the genocide of around 8,500 ethnic Bosnian Muslim men and boys by Serbian soldiers in 1995 during the War in Bosnia as part of the break up of Yugoslavia.
The intention of this genocide was to kill all ethnic male Bosnian Muslims in the region of Srebrenica, Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is the biggest mass murder in Europe since World War 2.
Harvey Arden: ~ An Open Letter to President-elect Barack Obama on Leonard Peltier ~
Dear President-elect Obama:
A Great Act of Mercy by you can help heal the still raw wounds of Indian people and their continuing confrontation with the 'Dominant Society' of the United States. I don’t know if you know the Leonard Peltier case personally; nor will I argue it here. Please talk to Secretary Bill Richardson and Sen. Inouye about this great injustice now in its 33rd year; they both know it well. Leonard was 31 when he was framed; he's now 64. A poll a couple of years ago asked thousands of people, "Who Is the Greatest American Indian in History?" The winner, yes, was Leonard Peltier. Crazy Horse, as I recall, was 2nd; Sitting Bull, 3rd. All Lakota ('Sioux') incidentally.
Mr. President-elect, I ask from my deepest heart that you grant a brief audience to me and Chief Arvol Looking Horse, 19th-Generation Keeper of the Sacred White Buffalo Pipe of the Great Lakota Nation, so that we may deliver a message to you on behalf of millions of good souls around the earth who plead for Leonard’s freedom, who see Leonard’s freedom as The Sign that Democracy and Love and Prayer and Justice still have a meaning in America.
I ask to read to you from Leonard’s book PRISON WRITINGS: MY LIFE IS MY SUN DANCE, of which I am privileged to be the editor. A wondrous stage play MY LIFE IS MY SUN DANCE has been produced from Leonard's words to rave audiences, and we will be delighted to bring the soon-to-tour words-and-music production to the venue of your choice, for you to experience the power and poetry and compassion of it. It wrings the soul.
I would welcome the presence of VP-elect Biden, Sec.-designate Hillary Clinton (and Bill, of course), Gov. Bill Richardson, Sen. Inouye, your new FBI director and any other persons you'd like to be on hand. I also ask to have Leonard Peltier himself standing beside me in the Oval Office as I read his words—words Leonard would read to you himself if his locked jaw would allow him to. Leonard also asks me to invite Mumia Abu Jamal--another political prisoner, to whom we also ask you to grant executive clemency. Freeing these two men would be an act of intrinsic greatness, I daresay a Holy Act.
Mr. President-elect, we await your strong hand in bringing these enormous and glaring injustices to an end.

At that time, the Commission noted that the names of an additional 500 victims (which would bring total to 8,606 victims) were being considered for an addition to the list.
Approximately 5,800 victims of Srebrenica Genocide have been identified through DNA analysis, but they can be reburied only after 70 percent of the bodily remains have been identified (Reuters). Bosnian Serbs first buried the bodies near the execution sites but then dug out many of them with bulldozers and reburied remains in secondary mass graves in an attempt to hide the crime (ICMP)."
'Greek Syndrome' is catching as youth take to streets - Europe, World - The Independent: "Europe exists it appears. In retirement, she was a frequent traveling companion of her husband, the linguist and political activist Noam Chomsky, as he delivered his public lectures.
Carol Chomsky was perhaps best known for her book, “The Acquisition of Syntax in Children From 5 to 10” (M.I.T. Press), which was considered a landmark study in the field when it appeared in 1969. In it, she investigated children’s tacit, developing awareness of the grammatical structure of their native language, and their ability to use that awareness to extract meaning from increasingly complex sentences over time...."

Sina Brown-Davis: Pacific Churches thank Australia for its leadership to effectively wipe out the Pacific region.
This comes in from our super-keen Indigenist corespondent Sina Brown-Davis:
For Immediate Release
Pacific Churches thank Australia for its leadership to effectively wipe out the Pacific region.
The Pacific Conference of Churches has criticized the Australian government as being gross under-achievers amongst the developed countries setting targets for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 2020.
“A proposed reduction of between 5-15% in greenhouse gas emissions will not put a dent in the global efforts to reduce the effects of climate change” said Mr. Fe’iloakitau Kaho Tevi, General Secretary of the Pacific Conference of Churches.
“We looked to Australia as a country that has the future of the Pacific region at heart. With all the millions of dollars of assistance to the Pacific region to address climate change, the Australian government now places green house gas emission targets at such a level that would render this much appreciated assistance null and void,” Mr. Tevi said.
“This announcement today is inconsistent with the overall actions of the Rudd government to date on climate change in the Pacific region.”
“20-25% emissions reduction by 2020 based on 1990s level was the absolute minimum. Australia has just outdone the minimum!.”
The member churches of the Pacific Conference of Churches face increasing consequences of sea level rise, coastal erosions, loss of cultural sites, loss of physical assets as a direct result of climate change. The Pacific Conference of Churches is concerned about the effects of these changes on the hope of some of our Pacific peoples and communities to remain on their islands and to retain their dignity as a people.
“Prayers alone will not save us now, what is needed is more cooperation and concerted action between the partner churches in Australia and the Pacific region to dialogue with the Australian government,” said Mr. Tevi.
“If no concerted action is done, our children will have to thank Australia for its leadership in effectively wiping out parts of our Pacific region as a result of not being bold enough in global negotiations and strong enough in national politics”.
The Pacific Conference of Churches stands in solidarity with our partner the Uniting Church in Australia in their call for support. As stated by Rev. Elenie Poulos, National Director of Uniting Justice, “Australia will suffer much greater impacts from climate change than other developed countries if quick and decisive action is not taken. It is our interests to lead by example”.

Most libertarians are probably all familiar with these gold and silver based, privately minted currencies. It's worth checking out The Shotgun Blog entry on one of the newest entries into the field, the Free Lakota Bank currency pictured to the right. The US dollar is hollow, like the house of cards that was Wall Street. So, the people promoting these alternative currencies cite the inherent value of the underlying metal for its legitimacy.
According to the Shotgun Blog, the AOCS, American Open Currency Standard, is a loose network of currencies noted above. Exactly what they "approve" I'm not sure.
Hopi crisis reaching boiling point | Indian Country Today | Southwest: "KYKOTSMOVI, Ariz. – On this Sunday afternoon dozens of cars lined the dirt road to the Veterans Center for the annual Christmas parade featuring Indian Santas and young tribal royalty. Those participating in the small parade threw candy and traditional blue corn treats to smiling spectators. The smiles are in contrast to what’s been described as a sad time in Hopi history, a reference to the web of political wrangling, which began a-year-and-a-half ago."
White Buffalo Calf Woman Society celebrating 31 years | Indian Country Today | Plains: "MARQUETTE, Mich. – Death was once the swift justice for American Indian men who battered or raped tribal women; but since colonization, some Native men have adopted the abusive ways of their white counterparts because they don’t fear a legal system that delays and reduces punishment, a crusader for women and children’s safety recently told a northern Michigan conference."
Tribe says police blockaded NY reservation -- Newsday.com: "NEW YORK - An American Indian tribe is suing Suffolk County saying a police blockade of entrances to its reservation was a case of harassment and racial discrimination. The Unkechaug Nation filed suit Friday in U.S. District court in Brooklyn. The daylong incident on Dec. 6 stemmed from the tribe s practice of selling tobacco products without charging state tax. The suit alleges the action violated the constitutional rights of the Unkechaug. Tribe lawyer James Simermeyer says the police blockade was 'deliberately set up to harass tribe members' by stopping people entering and leaving the Poospatuck Reservation near Mastic."

New Israeli crossings hurt Palestinian trade-report | Reuters: "JERUSALEM, Dec 22 (Reuters) - A new network of crossing points for Palestinian goods, built into Israel's barrier in and around the occupied West Bank, may hurt exports, not facilitate them as Israel claims, the World Bank said on Monday.
Israel will require all Palestinian commercial traffic to move through these crossing points once the barrier, made up of concrete walls and wire fences, is completed, the international lending agency said in a report."
Democracy Now! | Katrina's Hidden Race War: In Aftermath of Storm, White Vigilante Groups Shot 11 African Americans in New Orleans: "In a shocking new report, The Nation magazine exposes how white vigilante groups patrolled the streets of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, shooting at least eleven African American men. Local police have never conducted investigations into the shootings. We speak to reporter A.C. Thompson and New Orleans resident Donnell Herrington, who nearly died after being shot by a white vigilante. [includes rush transcript]"
Palestinian gunmen stand with their weapons during the funeral for a 40-year-old man in the northern Gaza Strip on Thursday. The man was killed when an Israeli missile hit his house in Beit Lahiya.
"By Robert Fisk
Editor’s note: This article was originally printed in The Independent.
A nit-picker this week. And given the fact that we’re all remembering human rights, the Palestinians come to mind since they have precious few of them, and the Israelis because they have the luxury of a lot of them.
And Lord Blair, since he’ll be communing with God next week, might also reflect that he still—to his shame—hasn’t visited Gaza. But the nit-picking has got to be our old friend United Nations Security Council Resolution 242. This, you’ll recall, was supposed to be the resolution that would guide all future peace efforts in the Middle East; Oslo was supposed to have been founded on it and all sorts of other processes and summits and road maps."
t r u t h o u t | UAW's Sacrifices Look to Some Like Surrender: "For decades after its founding in 1935, the United Auto Workers stood as a powerful model for the American labor movement, an influential organization that historians credit with uplifting living standards for all working Americans.
But with the announcement of the federal loan deal yesterday, the union found itself being forced into concessions that some described as tantamount to surrender."
“Mr. Warren compared same-sex couples to incest. I found that deeply offensive and unfair,” Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass., said in a broadcast interview.
“If he was inviting the Rev. Warren to participate in a forum and to make a speech, that would be a good thing,” Frank said. “But being singled out to give the prayer at the inauguration is a high honor. It has traditionally given as a mark of great respect. And, yes, I think it was wrong to single him out for this mark of respect.”"
The way Donnell Herrington tells it, there was no warning. One second he was trudging through the heat. The next he was lying prostrate on the pavement, his life spilling out of a hole in his throat, his body racked with pain, his vision blurred and distorted.
It was September 1, 2005, some three days after Hurricane Katrina crashed into New Orleans, and somebody had just blasted Herrington, who is African-American, with a shotgun. "I just hit the ground. I didn't even know what happened," recalls Herrington, a burly 32-year-old with a soft drawl.
A.C. Thompson: Rep. John Conyers expressed concern and a California activist group called for investigations of vigilante violence in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.
The Nation Institute : Both the perpetrators and victims of violent attacks in the wake of Hurricane Katrina share their stories in vivid detail
The sudden eruption of gunfire horrified Herrington's companions--his cousin Marcel Alexander, then 17, and friend Chris Collins, then 18, who are also black. "I looked at Donnell and he had this big old hole in his neck," Alexander recalls. "I tried to help him up, and they started shooting again." Herrington says he was staggering to his feet when a second shotgun blast struck him from behind; the spray of lead pellets also caught Collins and Alexander. The buckshot peppered Alexander's back, arm and buttocks.
Herrington shouted at the other men to run and turned to face his attackers: three armed white males. Herrington says he hadn't even seen the men or their weapons before the shooting began. As Alexander and Collins fled, Herrington ran in the opposite direction, his hand pressed to the bleeding wound on his throat. Behind him, he says, the gunmen yelled, "Get him! Get that nigger!"
There is an old Lakota woman [she does beautiful star quilts, in the traditional manner] on the Oglala Sioux reservation at Pine Ridge who is in danger of freezing this cold winter. She has lost her husband and is all alone, living in a small place near Manderson [where the holy man Black Elk is buried].
I have sent her what I can. It occurred to me, if I asked friends in America to send her some spare dollars, it might mount up, and get her through the cold spell. Many elders at Pine Ridge literally struggle to not freeze to dearth in the savage winter cold, but this is a particularly stark case. This old lady has no relatives on the rez. Can you help her?
If you can, then please send dollars in cash, or a dollar money order, [or even an international dollar money order - if sending something from abroad] to the following person and address=

============================================ EMERGENCY WINTER HEATING/UTILITY ASSISTANCE PROGRAM
October, 2008 through March, 2009
For the Elders, Disabled and the Sick Living on the
Lakota Sioux Reservations in South Dakota
Our goal is to raise $20,000.
We are not grant-funded at this time. We depend on YOU, the individual donor, to help these families in crisis.
§ Average income on the Oglala Lakota Sioux Pine Ridge Reservation is about $3,500.00 per YEAR. Jobs are extremely scarce; unemployment hovers around 85% on this 11,000-square-mile reservation which houses about 40,000 people. The other Lakota Reservations face similar economic conditions.
§ Death by hypothermia is always a concern on the reservations. Each winter (October – March), temperatures drop well below 0*F. Many families must choose between food and heat. In some cases, they have neither.
§ Federal LHEAP and Tribal Assistance Programs offer each low-income family approximately $300 per year. With the current rate of propane at $2.20 per gallon, this provides only 136 gallons – about enough fuel for 2 to 4 weeks (depending on the harsh weather).
§ Propane prices have already risen about 33% since last winter, and are expected to rise much higher as this winter goes on. Those families surviving with electric heat also face major increases in cost.
§ Propane companies require minimum amounts of propane to be purchased before delivery (currently $125 to $355 depending on the company). These minimum requirements are expected to skyrocket as the high cost of truck fuel increases. This makes families struggle even harder to accumulate enough funds at one time to ensure a delivery.
The Link Center Foundation has already received numerous emergency assistance applications that cannot be filled due to lack of funds. With propane, wood, and electricity prices continually rising, many more requests for help are expected to arrive.
95% of ALL donations to our heating/utility fund are USED for the heating/utility fund. The remaining 5% covers bank, credit card, and processing fees.
YOU Can Make A Difference!
All applicants are screened and documented
Payments are made directly to utility, propane, wood, or heat equipment companies
Donations carefully tracked and accountable
No donation too small

Obama slaps gays again. No openly gay Cabinet secretaries in Obama administration. With Obama running away from his gay one-time supporters, perhaps we need to take another look at what gay prostitute Larry Sinclair had to say about what happened in the back of that limousine in Chicago.

Newspaper Rock -- Where Native America Meets Pop Culture: "Brown’s on-air comments saw her look straight at the camera to tell the sad tale of a non-Indian Utah couple who recently had their adopted six-month-old son removed from their home.
The anchor explained that the adoptive parents “lost their son because the birth mother is part Native American,” noting that the boy’s mother is a member of the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe. She said that the tribe had gone to court and ended up winning the right to take custody of the child.
“A federal law called the Indian Child Welfare Act gives the tribe a legitimate claim,” Brown said, adding that the 1978 law was designed to keep Native American children with Native American families. And: “To me, that is a ridiculous law.”"
Eugene's righteous outrage leaps of the screen in disgust at Tamarack's website and the self-absorbed writings found there.
Indeed, the subject of any of Tamarack's writing is always and ultimately Tamarack himself. He just uses fakelore, wannabe atmospherics to try and give his fraud an air of authenticity, which never fools real Indigenous people, as the Pudgy Indian clearly demonstrates."

The last two decades have seen an upsurge of Latin American social movements, challenging the neoliberal paradigm and the governments that impose it. Movements such as the indigenous mobilizations of CONAIE in Ecuador, the cocaleros and mobilizations against water privatizations and gas pipeline investments in Bolivia, the Zapatista movement in Mexico, the landless rural workers of the MST in Brazil, Afro-Colombians resisting displacement in a region coveted by investors, and the piquetero eruptions of workers and the urban poor in the wake of Argentina's financial crisis, are contesting the region's political and economic systems."
Abiding in Bolivia: Weekend Reading: "People in the US seeking ways to confront the economic crisis could follow the lead of South American social movements. From Argentina to Venezuela, many movements have won victories against the same systems of corporate greed and political corruption that produce economic strife across the hemisphere. These movements also have experience holding politicians' feet to the flames once they are elected, a tactic that will be essential once Barack Obama takes office."

Disrespect of American Indians was a normal part of my growing up in rural South Dakota. Here is an incident I remember from the 1980s:
Our (non-Indian) high school basketball team often played the team from the Flandreau Indian School. I remember, vividly, the night we played on their court. We all stood for the national anthem – they stood on their side of the gym, we stood on ours. Then the school’s drum circle came out and played an anthem to the Sioux nation, presenting the colors of the US, the POW/MIA flag, and the tribal staff. Our teachers and coaches would not allow us to stand in respect of this tradition. Their side of the gym stood; ours sat."

OTTAWA/NIAMEY — The disappearance of two Canadians on a high-level UN mission to Niger grew even murkier yesterday, when a rebel group claimed responsibility for abducting them but later denied any involvement.
The bizarre claims and counterclaims by the group of Tuareg rebels, who eventually sought to cast the blame on Niger's government, left United Nations officials trying to evaluate whether their envoys are embroiled in infighting between rebel factions, but seemed to provide no solid information on where they are.

CENSORED NEWS: Mohawk Nation News: Real Algonquins at Barriere lake: "MOHAWK NATION NEWS Dec. 16, 2008. Yes, Virginia, there are real Algonquins. Created the natural way. Without any help from Canada’s Indian Affairs or their bureaucratic “Svengali”, Mother Joan Holmes. The Algonquins of Barriere Lake in northern Quebec have lived in the area now known as “LaVerendrye Park” since time immemorial, long before colonial Quebec or Canada existed. It’s a four hour drive north from Ottawa. They’ve taken care of the land so that the forest and water are pristine. Plenty of minerals lie beneath that they don’t want to disturb. Of course, the multinational corporations want to deforest the land, take out the fresh water and then dig for the minerals."

The Buffalo Post: "Seeking Justice for Indian People: The U.S. lacks an Indian Trust Policy (ITP) that protects Tribes from intrusion and misuse of our money and assets held in trust by the federal government. Our trust funds for our land and assets have been mismanaged by the Department of the Interior over a course of centuries: U.S. courts have repeatedly verified this misuse. The federal government has brokered and breached their trust and responsibility by depleting our land, money, and natural resources for their economic gain. Why change the current policy, as it works in their favor, except that it is unjust and the funds and holdings in this trust belong to the Indian community."
Indianz.Com > News > Opinion: Race-thinking persists in U.S. Indian policy: "Discredited elsewhere, 1930s race-thinking persists in U.S. tribal policy. Under current federal law, more than 500 groups presumed to possess “Indian blood” are authorized to govern themselves on reservations that are to varying degrees exempt from the laws of the states in which they are located. As these privileged “Indian blood” communities grow – and with federal recognition of additional such entities planned – states are worried about ever-increasing impediments to their ability to govern. For their part, tribal leaders see freedom from state laws as just the first step toward realizing tribal “sovereignty.”"
