Martha Coakley: Too Immoral for Teddy Kennedy’s Seat
by Ann CoulterOriginally published December 9, 2009.
In Tuesday’s primary election, Massachusetts Democrats chose as their Senate nominee a woman who kept a clearly innocent man in prison in order to advance her political career.
Martha Coakley isn’t even fit for the late Teddy Kennedy’s old seat. (What is it about this particular Senate seat?)
During the daycare/child molestation hysteria of the ’80s, Gerald Amirault, his mother, Violet, and sister, Cheryl, were accused of raping children at the family’s preschool in Malden, Mass., in what came to be known as the second-most notorious witch trial in Massachusetts history.
The allegations against the Amiraults were preposterous on their face. Children made claims of robots abusing them, a “bad clown” who took the children to a “magic room” for sex play, rape with a 2-foot butcher knife, other acts of sodomy with a “magic wand,” naked children tied to trees within view of a highway, and — standard fare in the child abuse hysteria era — animal sacrifices.
There was not one shred of physical evidence to support the allegations — no mutilated animals, no magic rooms, no butcher knives, no photographs, no physical signs of any abuse on the children.
Not one parent noticed so much as unusual behavior in their children — until after the molestation hysteria began.
There were no witnesses to the alleged acts of abuse, despite the continuous and unannounced presence of staff members, teachers, parents and other visitors at the school.
Not one student ever spontaneously claimed to have been abused. Indeed, the allegations of abuse didn’t arise until the child therapists arrived.
Nor was there anything in the backgrounds of the Amiraults that fit the profile of sadistic, child-abusing monsters. Violet Amirault had started the Fells Acre Day School 18 years before the child molestation hysteria erupted.
Thousands of happy and well-adjusted students had passed through Fells Acres. Many returned to visit the school; some even attended Cheryl’s wedding a few years before the inquisition began.
It’s one thing to put a person in prison for a crime he didn’t commit. It’s another to put an entire family in prison for a crime that didn’t take place.
In the most outrageous miscarriage of justice since the Salem witch trials, in July 1986, Gerald Amirault was convicted of raping and assaulting six girls and three boys and sentenced to 30 to 40 years in prison. The following year, Violet and Cheryl Amirault were convicted of raping and assaulting three girls and a boy and were sentenced to 8 to 20 years.
The motto of the witch-hunters was “Believe the Children!” But the therapists resolutely refused to believe the children as long as they denied being abused. As the police advised the parents: In cases of child abuse, “no” can mean “yes.”
To the children’s credit, they held firm to their denials for heroic amounts of time in the face of relentless questioning.
But as copious research in the wake of the child abuse cases has demonstrated, small children are highly suggestible. It’s surprisingly easy to implant false memories into young minds by simply asking the same questions over and over again.
Indeed, the interviewing techniques in the Amirault case were so successful that the children also made accusations against three other teachers, two imaginary people named “Mr. Gatt” and “Al” and even against the child therapist herself — the one claim of abuse that was provably true.
But only the Amiraults were put on trial for any alleged acts of abuse.
Coakley wasn’t the prosecutor on the original trial. What she did was worse.
At least the original prosecutors, craven and ambition-driven though they were, could claim to have been caught up in the child abuse panic of the ’80s. There had not yet been extensive psychological studies on the suggestibility of small children. A dozen similar cases from around the country had not already been discredited and the innocent freed.
Of all the men and women falsely convicted during the child molestation hysteria of the ’80s, by 2001, only Gerald Amirault still sat in prison. Even his sister and mother had been released after serving eight years in prison for crimes that never occurred.
In July 2001, the notoriously tough Massachusetts parole board voted unanimously to grant Gerald Amirault clemency. Although the parole board is not permitted to consider guilt or innocence, its recommendation said: “(I)t is clearly a matter of public knowledge that, at the minimum, real and substantial doubt exists concerning petitioner’s conviction.”
Immediately after the board’s recommendation, The Boston Globe reported that Gov. Jane Swift was leaning toward accepting the board’s recommendation and freeing Amirault.
Enter Martha Coakley, Middlesex district attorney. Gerald Amirault had already spent 15 years in prison for crimes he no more committed than anyone reading this column did. But Coakley put on a full court press to keep Amirault in prison simply to further her political ambitions.
By then, every sentient person knew that Amirault was innocent. But instead of saying nothing, Coakley frantically lobbied Gov. Jane Swift to keep him in prison to show that she was a take-no-prisoners prosecutor, who stood up for “the children.” As a result of Coakley’s efforts — and her contagious ambition — Gov. Swift denied Amirault’s clemency.
Thanks to Martha Coakley, Gerald Amirault sat in prison for another three years.
Remember all that talk about President Bush shredding constitutional rights? Overzealous liberal prosecutors and feminist do-gooders allowed Gerald Amirault to sit in prison for 18 years for crimes that didn’t exist — except in the imaginations of small children under the influence of incompetent child “therapists.”
Martha Coakley allowed her ambition to trump basic human decency as she campaigned to keep a patently innocent man in prison.
Anyone with the smallest sense of justice cannot vote to put this woman in any office. If you absolutely cannot vote for a Republican on Jan. 19, 2010, write in the name “Gerald Amirault.”

I hope that tomorrow's election in some small way begins Cloakley's "comeuppance". Disgusting behavior by a public servant.
Will Professor Obama stay the execution of the cop killer in Philly?
I think that after 41 yrs of Ted the Swimmer Kennedy, they want change and I don't mean Obama change.
Unbelievable. Go Brown.
Martha Coakley keeps showing what an arrogant moron that she is. I'm not the least bit surprised she would keep an innocent man in prison only to get name recognition for herself. It obviously didn't help her because Patrick Kennedy kept referring to her as "Marsha" the other day. I hope Scott Brown wins and wins big tomorrow. A Brown win will make going to Boston this summer all the more sweeter.
Coakleyis such a joke . Ifshe wins things will only get worst
Ann is a tres babe!
she is evil she refused to ienorce a legal court custody order in 2000 because i was the male parent with custody only after 5 months and some help and threats to follow her to every appearance accusing her of discrimination did she allow the state police cpac unit to enforce the order!
i hope she get cancer! she is a corrupt and vile person and she shouldn't be allowed to hold any public office she is sexist and uses power to further her own agendas! funny she went after the guy above but when a cop molested a lil girl with a curling iron she refused to press charges because the cops family donates to her campaign!
he husband is retired cambridge policeman and they even endorsed brown!
This is such a disgusting woman I live in California and I even donated to Scott brown I currently am working on the chuck devore campaign, but everytime I see coakley on tv I feel like I need to take a shower.
im planning on ahaving a party tomorrow to cel;ebrate her loss after i get back from volenteering to hold brown sign at the polls all day! im uneployed now so ill be at the polls all day donating my time!
i have yet to figure out how amnesty for illegals and cap and trade is gonna fix the unemployment situation i haven't yet seen one lefty loon that has been able to explain how this is gonna make things better! i was a registered dem but in 2000 i switched to independant and i will only vote for middle of the road of moderately conservative canidates ever since! i'll be at the polls before 8 am
lets turn this thing around vote for scott brown!
Isn't Mr. Amirault still on probation, forced to wear a tracking bracelet and listed on the sex offender list as well?
This poor man is still suffering at the hands of the horrible evil that the system and Martha Coakley committed against him.
What would the mainstreammedia have done to Bush had he went and campaigned for someone who had done this?
And that "Law Enforcement" enables. But thank them if you wish.
Not only did Gerald Amirault spend 3 more years in prison but he still lives as a level 3 sex offended with GPS strapped to his leg, a curfew and other restrictions. He is a convicted felon according to the law. Until, he receives a full pardon, unlikely while Democrats control the governor's office and presidency, he will forever be scarred by this and never live a normal life.
Thank you for republishing this. Coakley represents the very worst of the liberal lot. Whereas some actually believe they are doing good but are not smart enough to understand the absurdity of liberal policies, others–Like Martha–lie, steel, and cheat deliberately for the power alone.
Demo women are the worst.
Bitter, clenched teeth and a smarmy grin.
Pelosi, Boxer Shrillary, Coakley…
http://RightWingStuff.com
She keeps an innocent man in prison for three years and lets a child rapist roam the streets freely for two years without bail?? This woman is freaking unbelievable!
Her day will come Just like it does every human being.
She has a lot to answer for when she meets her maker for the first time.
He will treat her just like she treated the rest of humanity.
It's called Justice.
COAKLEY SHOULD BE HUNG FROM A ROPE UNTIL TEDDY
The proverbial "curling iron" of the people shall scorch down upon her tomorrow…
After all this time, there really is no amount of compensation that will restore this family's destroyed lives and business.
Say it. Say it again. Remember it:
Throughout recorded history, the greatest threat to man's life and liberty has always been governments.
Hopefully the good people of Mass will scare the HELL OUT OF YOUR GOVERNOR by voting in Scott Brown and justice can be obtained for Gerald Amirault.
The nation will be watching.
Decent morals don't have anything to do with being a Liberal Democrat. With the Libs it seems like the more immoral you are, the farther you go. Thankfully with the Dems finally imploding, pond scum like Coakley aren't getting the fast trip to the seat of power now (although a few really deserve the other "seat of power" for their traitorous actions…).
Coakley in action!
This is one scary chick!

DA Coakley, of course, insisted that this was all to protect the "victims." The prosecutors and their allies have never had any sincere concern for the Fells Acres children. There is no question that these children were abused — but not by the Amirault family. Any sane person who studies this case realizes that the children were abused by Scott Harshbarger, Tom Reilly, Patricia Bernstein, Larry Hardoon, Susan Kelley, Dr. Eli Newberger, and others. The abuse continues to this day, aided and abetted by DA Coakley, Catherine Sullivan, Lynn Rooney, other members of the Middlesex DA's office, and their political supporters. Because these people exposed the Fells Acres children to an enormous amount of highly sexualized interrogation, even forcing them to play with anatomically correct dolls, it is entirely fair to allege that these people are guilty of child sexual abuse. By trying to silence Cheryl, Coakley may hope to protect the real guilty parties in this case.
I can only say, I knew about this woman awhile ago. Where was everybody else on this? The woman is competent at one thing: using the power of her office to terrorize the citizens. Think how well she'll work with Kerry if she wins this somehow.
That was her? Dang! Had read this column back then, but had glanced over the name. I mean, it's a Democrat from "Massachusettes". Can't swing a dead cat . . . . Makes me even happier to know what's going to happen tomorrow!!
Its worse than that. She also kept real child molesters out of prison. A politically-connected couple who abused their 2-year old girl, hot curling iron up her butt, were protected by Coakley. It was years later that someone finally around to putting them in prison, no thanks to Coakley.!!
This is well written Ann! Thank you…I remember this on the news when I was in middle school. Relearning about it, and its applicaiton in today's world, specific to Massachusetts… WOW! Coakley has no sense or reason or moral compass…she's shameful!!!
This case furthered Coakley's career a minuscule amount. With progressives, the ends always justify the means. If innocent people have to sit in prison, it means nothing next to some votes come election time.
Has anyone gone after the "psychiatrist" responsible for this? Are there any legal actions that can be taken against these people? I would love to sue all those responsible for this hysteria, that have led to rules such as men not allowed to sit next to children in flights on BA. How can any man even consider a carreer in youth education with this possibly comming down on him?
I refuse to believe the good people of the Bay State, even the democratic majority will strongly vote for this Bastion of Social Justice, AG Coakly.
If they do they'll have to hold their noses as they pull on that lever.
One has to wonder how a creature like that sleeps at night…
This woman gives new meaning to the word" despicable". Recalling the case, at a time when we were as a nation way out of our box with real phobia about child molestation, the Amirault case was rank with the stink of raging bias. Ms Coakley is beyond offensive, bordering on evil. To so promote her own best interests at the cost of ruined lives soley by abusing her power is the perfect picture of what a police state looks like. While I do know that there must certainly be something wrong with the air in her state…witness long-term brain-dead voters for T. Kennedy….this is truly the opportunity for this state to join the nation in some form of clear thinking, to deliver the nation from the endless inanity of the Congress.
sadly enough, the only time in the last 15 years that the wretch lost sleep was this past week. i pray that all her victims get retribution tomorrow.
Please god a merciful end to the witch in Mass. She along with most of the leftwingers in our current gov must go somehow someway. Tomorrow could start a tidal wave cleasing the gov.
I did not know it was possible to be less moral than Ted Kennedy.
Who Knew ?
Hell, Ted Kennedy was too immoral for "Ted Kennedy's seat". Suffice it to say the seat belongs, as Scott Brown put it, to the people of Massachusetts. While I dread the thought of yet another attorney ending up in congress I like even less the idea of another elitist left wing socialite drone winding up in office.
Ann Coulter always prescient, always right, tell it like it is Ann!
I don't know where the first shot heard around the world came from but tomorrow MASSACHUSETTS will be the sight of the second shot. Let's just hope that Brown wins enabling the Republic to continue to exist after the smoke clears.
Ann's article should have been splattered all over FOX.
It's all up to you folks in Mass. You will make it a lot easier for us in Illinois to get rid of at least one of the two clowns we have in the senate come this November.
You're right!!! Maybe she'll land on the congressional "ethics" committee too. I wouldn't be surprised with this administration.
it's the dopeler effect. when something really stupid is coming at you really fast, it looks less stupid, but then as it's going away it looks even dumber…
I hope I'm wrong, but lets not forget that Massachusetts did rotely re-elect Kennedy for over 40(?) years in spite of his murdering Mary Jo Koepekne(sp). I doubt that people this sheepish have the self reflection to change their stripes just because a complete idiot is being proposed to replace a silver spooned alchoholic adulterous murderer.
It was the Kennedy mystique, which is long gone. I never voted for him, but certainly considered him a drunk and
a murderer. He usually ran unopposed. Mitt Romney, an unknown at the time, ran against him and lost. No
other opponents that I can remember. I also hold against him the demise of a once, very lovely, Joan Bennett
Kennedy, whom he drove to drink.
It sure takes someone "special" to surpass a Kennedy when it comes to "stink value" Martha just did.
IMO, there has been very little morality in the Kennedy family over the years. I hope this seat is taken by Brown, it's time for a change from the strong arm tactics.
No more HOAX and CHAINS.
I hope that the election goes for Brown and maybe some of the liberal jerks will see what is coming in Nov. Unless Obama is stopped in his tracks, he will completely ruin this country. No Experience at running anything surrounded by Crooks and the Chicago mafia Style Politicians, no telling how long it will take to recover. If Ever. Hard to believe that people are so blind they will give up their freedom and common sense just to kiss his Ass.
That was a very nice word picture!
My father, a CPA, had several very successful and wealthy clients who let their money go to their heads, particularly the one who inheireted their wealth. They pretty much demonstrated the same characterisitcs as Kennedy did. Selfish, arrogant, bullyish, prone to abuse (themselves and others), debauchery, defensive of their position, userous of other people, and an unclear boundary between truth and their world. To a man they drove their families to irrationality and their wives to either alchoholism, insanity or disdain.
dear leader seems to be doing a great job in that direction….
Coakley should have to answer for her willingness to destroy a family and keep an innocent man in jail. Since she is unwilling and acts as if she did nothing wrong she is underserving of your vote.
Send a message to this ever growing government by voting Scott Brown on Tuesday.
And keep an eye out, and a video recorder for those ACORN, Working Families Party, SEIU thugs!!!!!!!
Anyone who has spent a modest amount of time speaking out for Christianity on the internet is aware of how shamelessly and ignorantly some Liberals (and all their affiliates) are in trying to shove the Salem witch trials in your face. It is bittersweet, however, to learn of this hypocrisy.
BHO COVER-UP in Hawaii DHO. Not BS…full blown investigation.
BREITBART…PLEASE CONSIDER AN EXCLUSIVE ABOUT THE DHO ARTICLE. THANK YOU.

I just hope the reprinting of this article pushes people to the polls tomorrow. I think the nation needs to see a huge turnout along with any footage of voter intimidation, which, if it happens, should be broadcast immediately.
Yes he is, but as far as we know NO-Bama hasen't killed any women yet.
Ann your article and the precise manner it is presented, should have been ran time and again to wake up those who vote the party line, and then complain that the person they elected is immoral.
After Martha bites the dust tomorrow, I suspect O'dumbo will appoint her as his Czar of Sports. Considering the way this turkey does things; it is a perfect fit for his bogus administration.
Thanks for your support. and hard work! I too have been unemployed since August but live in the Midwest so I can't directly there. I believe this is an awakening for Americans that will get us back on the right track with a lot of hard work and making our appointed leaders (regardless of whatever party they label themselves) A LOT MORE ACCOUNTABLE for the decisions they are making for the people of these United States of America.
All I can say is WOW!
"Too Immoral For Teddy Kennedy's Seat"
That's saying something!
I followed the WSJ reports about the Amirault's plight for years. Witch hunt is a very appropriate term. I had forgotten about Caokley's role in this horrendous miscarraige of justice.
I recall that Mr. Amirault never admitted to any guilt. Kudos to him. Too bad that the truly guilty, the real child molesters in this case, i.e., Coakley and the DA's gang, will never admit to THEIR guilt.
A. C.'s suggestion to write in "Gerald Amirault" is probably the most damning thing that could be done to Coakley. Wouldn't it be nice if there were more votes for Mr. Amirault than Coakley?!
Lets not go that far. What happened to Donald Young? The great cover up worthy of the Clinton era. But then I don't know if Donald was the " she or the he"…hmmmm
From all that I have read, it was the toddler's uncle, a policeman, who abused the child. The mother, I think, is the one who persisted until he was found out.
The Kennedy name carried a lot of weight for a long time. Jack and Bobby cast a shadow that covered Teddy like an umbrella. That is all gone now. Fresh start.
Wow, Ann. Really?
I'm sure Coakley is a scumbag and I hope she gets crushed tomorrow but I have to say I was really disappointed with your article after the build-up of the title.
You go into a detailed account of what occurred to get the Amiraults convicted then you tell us that Coakley had nothing to do with the conviction. Then you tell us that Coakley "frantically lobbied" the governor to keep Amirault in prison but you give us absolutely no specifics. So the decision was ultimately the governor's but you put the blame on Coakley? And you don't tell us exactly why? Like I said, I hope Coakley loses tomorrow but I have to say, you're a horrible story teller, Ann.
Cowboy, this Coakley is just a trailer trash broad. Nothing more. I hated the Kennedy clan for their power to manilpulate the law of this country but atleast they had some social class, namely John and Bobby. This woman is nothing. She is fodder for Obama. Under the bus you go stupid woman.
I don't think Coakley IS too immoral for Kennedy's seat. She fits it perfectly in my view.
Self serving and treacherous….that comes to mind. A man sits in prison to further Coakley's "career".
Well, lets hope the good people of Mass. put an utter end to her "career".
As always Ann hammers the nail in one strike. Well no. Didn't health care take several strikes?
Ann you are my Hero and I'm very pleased to see you here at Big Government. Excellent article, people need to be reminded of these media-driven frenzies and the destruction they cause. I didn't know this about Coakley, the woman has no soul.
Camelot is dead. Jack and Bobby are the only reason he sits on a hill at Arlington.
Don't want to be a conspiracy theorist but there are some interesting dots to connect between the original prosecutor in this case and the internal "investigation" staged by ACORN. Something about a long history of questionable behavior on the part of one individual.
Thank you, TexasRancher, for correcting disinformation that could cause further harm.
You are overlooking one very important thing. This election is not just about the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, It is a referendum on the direction we the American people want this country to go in. It is obvious to me that the Mass. voters are totally rejecting Obama's view of America. It is a good thing for him all 50 states re not voting for senators on Tuesday.
"Common Man" my conservative Irish arse. You're the typical Massachusetts voter who kept a piece of garbage like Kennedy in office for more than 40 years. And to think of all the Founding Fathers who hailed from your state. What a disgrace!
Martha Coakley is manufactured by the liberal agenda, conditioned to think that money & political gain are power. While everything she does, goes against god and nature. She is nothing but an inhuman machine.
While it's nice to know what they are, it's also highly disturbing, how settled politicians are in their clockwork corruption. This is tyranny people, & we suffer by the hands of "our own". Democrats, and some republicans, have been getting away with murder in our beloved U.S. of A., for decades running now.
This is why people like Ann who want to throw in this subjective/selective stuff about what is or isn't "moral" needs to end.
Now it's been revealed that Brown posed for Cosmo in 1982. I say who cares! But I also don't moralize people's behavior and set myself up for ridicule and accusations of hypocrisy.
This nation is about Freedom or Control – the rest of this subjective/selective personal value placed is nothing more than fuel to a liberal fire toward self-destruction.
I care whether something advances freedom or it starts to control another American's choices toward his personal pursuit of happiness.
Get off this garbage about what is moral and what isn't. Decide what is moral for you, Ann, but stop being self-righteous in thinking your personal morality is how EVERYONE should live.
If you uphold individual freedom, then that means the freedom for each to decide, each to live life in trial and error, in as much as he does not infringe on your personal freedom or choices.
I remember the 80's molestation hysteria well. It's odd because I was thinking about it a few days ago, wondering if everyone was able to move on. We had a very publicized case in my city. The stories from the children were beyond bizarre. I believe a few of the day care workers actually went to jail, but were later released.
Ok, so everyone got caught up in the hysteria, but the right thing to do is to revisit, re-evalute and release if innocent. Statistically, those people were probably innocent .
My dislike of Coakley just kicked into hate.
Martha a typical dirty nasty liberal who will do whatever is necessary to win. The people of Mass. have allowed this to continue for decades. They deserve whatever they get.
I've never seen a politician as corrupt as cOAKley. Bertha Lewis garners more respect than this waste of space.
HAH!
If you think that's bad, and believe me it is, google Martha Coakley Father John Geoghan.
Our political system is not designed to "unconvict" people who have been convicted of a serious crime. How many people have we seen convicted of rape on eye-witness testimony only to be vindicated by DNA evidence years later. And it still takes months to get new trials and secure a release.
This case had no such smoking gun pointing to the innocence of Gerald Amirault. So it is unfair to blame Coakley for the shortcomings of our criminal justice system. And it is disingenuous for Ann Coulter to find a sudden interest in a criminal case two years after the guy won his release. What do you want to bet that had Coakley gone along with the early release she would have been savaged by the right for being soft on crime. So they deserve some responsibility for this miscarriage of justice.
What an idiot, maybe you should read what you write before you post something tool.
I'll just start with the first sentence;
Our political system dosn't convict anyone, that would be the job the courts in the judicial system.
The rest has such skewed logic, one has to assume you're product of a government funded school.
Wow. Thanks for the history.
Too immoral for Kennedy's seat?
From what I have read I despise this woman, but I don't think that it is possible to be worse than good old Ted.
I think that would be like breaking a basic law of physics.
Thats bad but thats not all.
All you people would enjoy on You Tube…..Massachusetts Miracle…..it is great, real history in the making….
GO SCOTT BROWN
VOTE SCOTT BROWN
i'm guessing the real reason Gerald Amirault is still required to wear a GPS bracelet is not to monitor his location relative to any young children, but to track his whereabouts if any of the scum who did this to his life start turning up dead…
This race will be bought and paid for by the Dems. Union deals and welfare checks!
.
Anne Coulter in the house!
Coakley is a horrible, but still not reptilian enough to rival Teddy.
.
How about her prosecution for illegal use of state campaign funds to run for this seat. At least she would be imprisoned for crimes she actually committed.
That is true…however there was Teddy, all wet and alive hiding in a motel room. But with NO-Bama it is just speculation. I would love to see proof, there is so much about that jerk that we just dont know, YET.
Ann DID tell you why:
"to show that she was a take-no-prisoners prosecutor, who stood up for “the children.” As a result of Coakley’s efforts — and her contagious ambition — Gov. Swift denied Amirault’s clemency."
Wouldn't it be ironic if the second 'shot heard round the world' came from an anti-gun, socialist state?
