    The US killed eight Taliban fighters in a pair of airstrikes in North Waziristan. The Taliban killed five security personnel and blew up a NATO fuel tanker in Khyber. Ten Taliban fighters and three militia fighters were killed in a clash in Kurram. A Taliban commander and 38 fighters surrendered in Bajaur.


    The US killed Sadam Hussein Al Hussami, who is also known as Ghazwan al Yemeni, in an airstrike in North Waziristan on March 10. Hussami was a top operative in al Qaeda's external operations network. He aided in the suicide attack on Combat Outpost Chapman, which killed seven CIA officials and a Jordanian intelligence officer.


    The parties of Prime Minister Maliki and former Prime Minister Allawi are in a dead heat in the parliamentary election, with more than 80 percent of the votes counted. Security forces detained seven wanted men in Basrah and two Naqshabandiya fighters in Makhmour. Insurgents killed a Christian in Mosul.


    Algerian security forces have dismantled a terrorist cell that provided logistical support to Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb's El Ansar Brigade in Bordj Menaïel and that also provided information about the authorities' movements in the region. El Ansar Brigade's former emir and nine other fighters were sentenced in absentia to life in prison by a Boumerdes court. Maghreb nations have met in Algeria to forge a unified strategy in tackling AQIM.


    Security forces detained eight members of an Qaeda-linked terror group planning to carry out attacks in the capital of Baku. Several Chechens and Dagestanis were among those captured. The group was smuggling weapons from Georgia to conduct the attack.


    Police killed two suicide bombers in Helmand. Coalition and Afghan forces killed an undisclosed number of Taliban fighters, and detained two IED cell leaders and three fighters in Helmand, Kandahar, Khost, and Paktika. The Taliban killed two British soldiers in an IED attack in the South and murdered a government official in Ghazni.


    US officials said progress in Iran's nuclear program has slowed, leaving room for continued pressure. Police and the Basij militia cracked down on the celebration of the "fire festival." Iran asked OPEC to provide a $200 billion investment in its energy industry.


    March 16, 2010:

    The US killed 11 Taliban and al Qaeda fighters in an airstrike in North Waziristan. Police seized more than 1,000 pounds of explosives and detained 10 suspected terrorists in Lahore. The Lashkar-i-Islam killed two cricket players in Peshawar. A woman was killed in a bombing in Karachi. The US transferred 14 Cobra attack helicopters to the Pakistani military.
