Luton protest trial and Islam4UK ban: huge attacks on civil liberties

Convictions for peaceful protests deemed 'offensive' to chauvinists, and plans to ban an organisation which is not accused of any crime, mark a further onslaught on basic liberties in Britain.

Beneath the tabloid hysteria, and with media whitewash causing many of people to give their attention to the politics of Islam4UK rather than the serious threats facing activists in Britain, the state is ramping up repression to new extremes, using its 'war' on political Islam as an ideology (even when nobody has been harmed directly) to drive wedges into basic liberties yet again.

COURT RULING BANS 'OFFENSIVE' PROTESTS 

First off, five Muslim protesters have been convicted for peaceful and apparently legal protests against a chauvinistic military march in Luton. 

This is the outcome of an ongoing attack on the right to protest following anti-war protests at a military parade.

The protesters had been very careful to obtain police permission, did not disobey police instructions on the day, and carefully avoided any slogans which could be deemed to condone terrorism. BUT SERIOUSLY INSULTED OUR SOLDIERS Their trial has been duly exposed by their defence lawyers as an abuse of process and a travesty of the claim that the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are in defence of 'democracy' and 'freedom'.

They were convicted of harassment on the grounds that they were found offensive by chauvinists and bigots IE NORMAL BRITISH PEOPLE attending the chauvinistic parade. A few of these bigots, who look suspiciously like EDL, EDL FORMED AS A RESULT OF THIS AND DIDNT EXIST AT THE TIME attacked the protesters in Luton. After the event, various disreputable newspapers ran stories condemning the protests and praising the EDL goons who attacked them. 

Like the previous case at the Mohammed cartoon protests,IN WHICH JIHADISTS WENT MENTAL OVER NOTHING in which the category of 'solicitation to murder' (which actually means hiring an assassin) NO IT DOESNT was used to gain convictions for acts of political advocacy (incitement law could not have been used as there was no serious and demonstrable likelihood of resulting action), the law has been distorted around the certainty that certain groups must be wrong - even if their acts are entirely within the law as previously written and interpreted. 

It seems that, as believers in an unpopular ideology, the protesters were taken to be guilty in advance - the charges simply had to be invented after the event. NO THEY COMMITTED OFFENCES AT THE TIME As a result, new categories of 'crimes' are created on the spot by judges and juries expanding interpretations of existing laws to allow criminalisation of entire categories of formerly legal action. 

The convictions set a precedent which could make it illegal for ANY protester to say something deemed offensive to bigots, Sun readers, Nazis or the target of the protest. READ THIS AS THE BRITISH PUBLIC This is a big extension of the current abuse of harassment laws. 
It will most likely now be taken as illegal: 
* to call a politician or a foreign head of state a murderer or a warmonger on a protest, 

DOUBT IT
* to call a fox hunter or a vivisector a torturer, 

MY ARSE

* to shout anything which could be deemed an "insult",

IS IT?

* to call people "Nazi scum", 

NEVER

* to berate arms dealers with having no morals. 

ARE YOU SERIOUS? 

These things have been banned, not by a new law, but by an abusive extension of an existing law (on harassment) which is already widely abused. 

It seems that radical Islam has become a kind of 'black hole' around which discourse is distorted - so necessary is it taken to be that any action however harmless taken by radical Islamists is illegal, introducing a case against radical Islamists is allowed to corrupt rational discourse to the point where new prohibitions emerge retrospectively, on the spot, as laws are stretched to make legal actions a 'crime. 

NO, OFFENSIVE ABUSE OF OUR BRAVE SOLDIERS IS A "CRIME"

CRIMINALISING DISSENT 

Meanwhile, the attempt to ban Islam4UK, the current group label used by radical Islamists allegedly  NOT ALLEGEDLY - DEFINITELY - WHO YOU TRYING TO FOOL? connected to al-Muhajiroun, is apparently to be banned - because it has been too successful in getting media attention. 

Under the draconian laws allowing proscription of 'terrorist' groups - extended in 2006 to those who 'glorify' terrorism - someone can be jailed for ten years simply for belonging to an organisation. A TERRORIST ORGANISATION Given the networked nature of many modern organisations, this could easily be used to jail people simply for who they know, who they associate with or what they believe. NO ONLY TERRORISTS The situation is in effect a new McCarthyism - an ideology, not a set of actions, is banned. 

It must have been expected that the group would simply re-form. Anarchist groups faced with similar persecution do the same. So too have Basque separatist groups in Euskal Herria, Kurdish and democratic Muslim parties in Turkey, and parliamentary parties of former ruler Thaksin in Thailand.  ALL TERRORIST CUNTS The current ruling party in Turkey (the AK Party), roughly akin to the Christian Democrats in other countries, has previously been banned several times by the military and judiciary seeking to retain control, only to be re-formed under new labels and repeat its electoral success. 

The group in question allegedly has as many as 81 'front' organisations already formed, any of which could be activated following the ban.

The result is an endless cat-and-mouse hunt in which the organisation can never be truly banned, but simply chased from one designation to another. 

Security sources have also allegedly opposed the bans on the grounds that they make the group's activity harder to monitor. 

So why has it been banned? 

Again, to set a bad precedent - and to look 'tough' to the tabloids and the bigots NORMAL BRITS  with an election ahead. 

On the latter point - of course the tabloids will find a new bogeyman. As long as there is a single Muslim in Britain, the tabloids will be able to find someone to portray as their archetypal 'mad Mullah'. They have already passed from Abu Hamza to Abu Izzadeen to this latest bogeyman, Anjem Choudhary. This will continue, moving from the more 'radical' to the less. The threat to all Muslims is massive. Many people are joining a Facebook group calling for Choudhary to be deported - despite his being a British citizen. Apparently, British Muslims don't count as truly British. Press reports have targeted the Muslim Council of Britain for supporting the Palestinian struggle, even if British troops were sent to Palestine.  TRAITORS

Newspaper hysteria following the Detroit bombings has included calls for Islamic student societies to be banned unless they can 'guarantee' nobody in them will be 'radicalized'.  BANG ON

More crucial, however, is the precedent this sets. 

It has now been established that the government can ban an organisation which does nothing more than shout slogans. It doesn't even have to prove that the organisation glorified terrorism. It simply has to have an overlapping membership or similar rhetoric to another group which is supposed to have glorified terrorism. 

SHUT UP THEY GLORIFIED 9/11 SIMPLES

This could have a massive effect, giving the police new powers to persecute dissidents across the political spectrum. 

WHO WRITES THIS DERANGED SHITE?

Hence for example, they could ban ALF, ELF, or the Italian 'insurrectionist international' (which doesn't exist but is stated to exist in various court cases); then they could claim that dozens of local animal rights groups, Earth First!, Anarchist Black Cross, or whoever else they want is the same organisation and ban them as well. 

THEY WONT BOTHER AS YOU ARE NOBODY AND IVE NEVER HEARD OF YOU

 

t should also be noted that, if this banning of parties deemed to condone terrorism had been done in Northern Ireland, the Good Friday Agreement would have been impossible. There can never be peace if one side cannot express its views or protest peacefully. The state seems to have decided it wants to preclude the possibility of peace or dialogue in advance.

MUDDYING THE WATERS: THE CAMPAIGN AGAINST POLITICAL ISLAM 

Many people, including some on the left and posters on Indymedia, are mudding the waters of the need to fight back against state repression by emphasising issues with the politics of Islam4UK. 

The group has many authoritarian views incompatible with socialism, liberalism and anarchism.  EXACTLY SO WHY DO YOU PROTECT THEM YOU TWATS? In principle, it would like to create a theocratic state in Britain, similar to those in Saudi Arabia and Iran. They doubtless have some quite nasty views  YES (though also some quite laudable ones - against imperialism for example). WOW MAYBE THEY'LL LEAVE YOUR BEHEADING TILL LAST YOU TIT

Crucially, however, it has no chance of succeeding in such goals. Moreover, it is pursuing them by entirely peaceful means.YEH RIGHT  It is no different in this regard from dozens of small Christian groups which would similarly like to see some authoritarian social order established around religion, but which pursue their means by preaching, worshipping and converting. 

In addition, the group is tiny - perhaps two dozen people showed up in Luton. 

2000 PEOPLE ARE ON MI5'S LIST OF EXTREME BOMB SUSPECTS

It is surreal to compare such a tiny group to the likes of the EDL and the BNP, which are hundreds or thousands-strong Nazi groups which spread their message through racist violence and terror. 

EDL HAVE NO LINKS TO VIOLENCE OR TERROR YOU DIV

It is even more surreal to assess the group's political rights by its goals, which it has no means to achieve. By the same standard, if it is OK to ban Islam4UK because of its repulsive ideology, it should also be OK to ban the Conservatives, Labour, various authoritarian-socialist groups, pro-Israel groups, etc. The whole point of free speech is that it applies to everyone. EXCEPT TERRORISTS AND ENEMIES OF DEMOCRACY 

An exception is sometimes made for Nazis because of their inherently hateful ideology and violent means. But small Muslim groups cannot be compared to Nazis  they have neither the numbers nor the violent methods. 

CAN YOU HEAR YOURSELF? 

In any case, racism and fascism are not simply abstract views but are connected to deep forces of colonialism and white supremacy in societies such as Britain. To put all forms of prejudice and authoritarianism on the same level with Nazis shows a complete failure to understand the impact of white privilege and white supremacy in the contemporary world.

SAY THAT IN ENGLISH

 

Crucially, the group is not being banned because they have a vile ideology.  YES IT IS It is hard to find an aspect of Islamic theocracy which is not echoed in the discourse of the right-wing sections of the press. They, too, call for corporal and capital punishment. They, too, oppose the gains of women's liberation and gay rights. They supported Moseley in the 30s. They constantly race-bait against Muslims and immigrants. They supported the jailing of Oscar Wilde. They oppose the idea of human rights. They ran to the defence of Nazi Geert Wilders when he was banned from Britain under laws they had supported. The only reason they spew their hateful filth against certain Muslim leaders is because of their skin colour and visible difference. NO BECAUSE THEY WANT TO MURDER ALL NON BELIEVERS

Islam4UK has actually had a very effective strategy of identifying with the unspeakable in the situation, speaking the 'truth' of the situation (in Lacanian terms) - that imperialist war is nothing to celebrate, that British soldiers are committing routine atrocities overseas, MY ARSE  that the nationalist rituals of ordinary British life are a cover for something terrible which must be opposed  IF YOU HATE YOUR OWN COUNTRY FUCK OFF ABROAD - the things which nobody dares say, or at least to say in a disruptive enough way to interrupt the normal functioning of the performance of ideology - and it is this disruption (not their specific political views) which is the reason for the hatred directed against them. They are fully expecting persecution, and embracing it almost Gandhi-style,  GANDHI WAS PEACEFUL not at all with guns and bombs (whatever their rhetoric says). NOT MUCH

It is not as if they are getting away with violence. If their members commit acts of terrorism, physically attack people, or incite racial hatred, this is already covered by dozens of other laws, some of them very extreme... without the banning of the group having any effect whatsoever. It is simply that they are exercising their basic democratic rights - and being criminalised for it. Right now, arguing about the political views of Islam4UK is like standing around in Nazi Germany arguing about whether Zionists have horrible politics. The real issues are pervasive Islamophobia concealed under a front of 'anti-extremism' - and the destruction of what little remains of the right to dissent in Britain's nascent police state.

The destination of this very special event is the small market town of Wootton Bassett, located 6 miles Southwest of Swindon, in northern Wiltshire; Wootton Bassett, is currently famous for its public mourning processions held in memory of British soldiers killed whilst on military service in Afghanistan; coffins containing the dismembered bodies of these soldiers are usually draped in union jack flags and driven through the town centre from RAF Lyneham, as a tribute to their ‘sacrifice'.

The proposed march by members of Islam4UK is however of a very different venture, held not in memory of the occupying and merciless British military, but rather the real war dead who have been shunned by the Western media and general public as they were and continue to be horrifically murdered in the name of Democracy and Freedom - the innocent Muslim men, women and children.

It is quite extraordinary, that with well over 100,000 Muslims killed in Afghanistan in the last 8 years that those military serviceman who have directly or indirectly contributed to their death are paraded as war heroes and moreover honoured for what is ultimately genocide.

We at Islam4UK find this totally unacceptable and as a result have decided to launch the ‘Wootton Bassett March' to highlight the real casualties of this brutal Crusade.

An open letter from the Welsh, English, Irish and Scottish Defence Leagues to Anjem

Dear Anjem,

We have for some time been monitoring statements by your good self re: our troops in Afghanistan etc.
Your latest statement about plans to march on a little Wooten Bassett where our war dead are honoured is
possibly your most heinous idea yet. You mention how hundreds of thousands of innocent Afghani muslims
are being 'murdered' our troops, yet never mention just how many innocent muslims are being killed by the
Taliban or by suicide bombers in both Iraq and Afghanistan. It is a plain, undeniable fact that suicide bombers 
will never reach paradise, according to your own Holy book.. they will burn in hellfire. Yet you rejoice in this. 

You obviously despise this Country, you despise our ways, our religion and our tolerant culture. This is, of
course your democratic right. This is Britain, you are entitled to your opinion no matter how disgusted the majority
of Christians, Muslims, Sikhs and Hindus may be by you.

As a token, an olive branch if you like. We offer to pay all your expenses should you choose to relocate to
a country (such as Saudi Arabia) that practices Sharia law. Britain isn't for you, you dont like it here, our
western culture disgusts you. A move to Saudi would also raise your standing in the Muslim world, currently
there are millions of muslims in Britain who are repulsed by you. There are many people in Britin who believe 
you denounce Britain and all things British yet are happy to live under its democratic social security comfort
blanket, you appear to be a hypocrite to many, by moving to Saudi Arabia you will be proving just how genuine
you are about Sharia law. The Koran also states that Muslims should live in peace in a foreign land and respect
its customs and cultures (as the vast majority of Muslims, Sikhs, Hindus etc do) but if a muslim is not happy to 
do this he/she should seek to move to a muslim country. We will be willing to fund your move, and of any other 
members of your group who are sick of Britain. 
 
The only stipulation we would make is that you give up your British passport and your British Citizenship. This
shouldn't be any real problem for you as surely every day spent living here must be awful for you. 

We believe in a multi-cultural society. Many of our members are from ethnic backgrounds. most Muslims in this
country believe in Britain, in its values, in its freedoms and in its tolerant attitudes. You do not. That is your
Democratic right. But you do not WANT democratic rights, do you?? Surely taking money from the Social Welfare
system of an evil system should be abhorrent to you.

Their voices echo loudly and more men suddenly appear; startled passengers move aside. The group march forward waving St George Cross flags and holding up placards. The throng of men around me applaud. A train heading for Glasgow draws up on the opposite platform and the men turn as one, bursting into song: 'Engelaand, Engelaand, Engelaand.'

Some of the men hide behind balaclavas, others wear black hoodies. A few speak on mobile phones, their hands pressed against their ears to block out the cacophony. 

'It's already kicking off in Manchester. This could be tasty,' shouts one. MY ARSE

These are some of the most violent football hooligans in Britain and today they have joined together in an unprecedented show of strength. Standing shoulder to shoulder are notorious gangs - or 'firms' as they are known - such as Cardiff City's Soul Crew, Bolton Wanderers' Cuckoo Boys and Luton Town's Men In Gear.

The gathering is remarkable, as on a match day these men would be fighting each other. But it is politics that has drawn them together.

WE ARENT POLITICAL

They are headed for Manchester to support a march by the burgeoning English Defence League.

The police are here in force, too. 'Take that mask off,' barks a sergeant to one young man. He does so immediately but protests: 'Why are they allowed to wear burkas in public but we're not allowed to cover our faces?'

YEH WHY? CAN I WALK IN A BANK WITH A BALACLAVA ON? 

'Just do what you' told,' the policeman snaps back.

'It's always the same these days. One rule for them and another for us. I'm sick of this country,' a man standing next to me says in a West Country accent. 

He draws on a cigarette then flicks it to the ground in disgust. He starts to complain again but when the tannoy announces the arrival of the train to Manchester Piccadilly he raises his hands above his head and starts another favourite. 

'Rule Britannia, Britannia rule the waves... Britons never, never, never...' His companions join in. As the train comes to a halt the crowd surges forward.

The carriages are almost full so the men pack themselves into the aisles followed by policemen speaking into radios. A group of lads drinking beer at a table eye the new contingent warily.

One man wearing a baseball cap clocks their fear and reassures them. 

'It's all right lads, nothing to worry about. We're protesting against radical Islam. Come and join us.'

Further up the carriage another bursts into song. 

'We had joy, we had fun, we had Muslims on the run,' he starts up. Nobody joins in and a couple of his mates tell him to 'shut up' as they point to a woman dressed in a black hijab sitting at a table.

EXACTLY WHAT WEVE BEEN SAYING ABOUT TRYING TO CONTROL PEOPLE ON DEMOS 

A man standing close to her is masked and holds a placard. It has a picture of a Muslim woman crying with red blood streaming down her face. 'Sharia law oppresses women!' the slogan reads.

The rise of the English Defence League has been rapid. Since its formation at the start of the summer the group has organised nearly 20 major protests in Britain's cities, including London, Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds, Luton, Nottingham, Glasgow and Swansea.

Its leaders are professional and articulate and they claim that the EDL is a peaceful, non-racist organisation. But having spent time with them, there is evidence that this movement has a more disturbing side. There is talk of the need for a 'street army', and there are links with football hooligans and evidence that violent neo-Nazi groups including Combat 18, Blood and Honour and the British Freedom Fighters have been attending demos.

COMBAT 18? THE SAME MOB WHO ATTACKED OUR LADS IN LONDON AS JEW LOVERS, YEH OK

Violence has erupted at most of the EDL's demonstrations. YES EVERY ONE THAT HAS HAD A UAF COUNTER DEMO, BEFORE THEY KNEW WHAT WAS GOING ON THERE WAS NO VIOLENCE, FUNNY THAT

In total, nearly 200 people have been arrested and an array of weapons has been seized, including knuckledusters, A NOVELTY SMALL KNUCKLEDUSTER NECKLACE FROM LADY ENGLAND  a hammer, a chisel and a bottle of bleach. ALL TAKEN FROM ONE CAR IN HARROW FROM MUSLIMS (AT A DEMO THAT WAS NOT CONNECTED TO THE EDL)

As the EDL gains support across the UK, Muslims have already been targeted in unprovoked attacks. In the worst incident, a mob of 30 white and black youths is said to have surrounded Asian students near City University in central London and attacked them with metal poles, bricks and sticks while shouting racist abuse. Three people - two students and a passer-by who tried to intervene - were stabbed.

THE FIRST WE'VE HEARD - SINCE WHEN HAVE KNIFE CRIME RIDDEN OUT OF CONTROL YOUTHS IN LONDON HAD ANYTHING TO DO WITH THE EDL? 

Following the Manchester protest, when 48 people were arrested during street violence, the Bolton Interfaith Council Executive issued a stark warning that race relations were under threat and Communities Secretary John Denham compared the EDL to Oswald Mosley's Union of British Fascists, who ran amok in the Thirties. In response to these fears, the National Extremism Tactical Coordination Unit, a countrywide police team set up to combat domestic extremism, has been investigating the EDL.

PITY THEY DIDNT SHOW THIS MUCH CONCERN ABOUT JIHADISTS, ITS SO MUCH EASIER TO GO AFTER "WHITEY" 

'The concern to me is how groups like this, either willingly or unwillingly, allow themselves to be exploited by very extreme right-wing groups like the National Front and the British Freedom Fighters,' Metropolitan Police chief Sir Paul Stephenson has said.

I had met the English Defence League for the first time in Luton three weeks before the Manchester demonstration. After several calls, key members agreed to talk on the condition that I did not identify them. We met at a derelict building close to Luton town centre. Eleven men turned up. All wore balaclavas, as they often do to hide their identities, and most had black EDL hoodies with 'Luton Division' written on the back.

AS LIVING IN LUTON THEY'D GET A PETROL BOMB THROUGH THEIR WINDOW, I EXPECT THEY'D GET MORE RESPECT FROM YOU IF THEY SHOWED THEIR FACES IS IT LOVE? 

They'd made placards bearing slogans such as 'Ban the Burka'.

FRANCE BANNED THE BURKA, CAN YOU NOT SEE THE SECURITY IMPLICATIONS OF PEOPLE HAVING DRIVING LICENCES/PASSPORTS WITH FACES COVERED, AND TERRORISTS LEAVING THE COUNTRY IN THEIR SISTER'S BURKAS? 

The group's self-proclaimed leader, who goes by the pseudonym Tommy Robinson, did most of the talking. A father of two, Robinson explained the background to the rise of the movement.

'For more than a decade now there's been tension in Luton between Muslim youths and whites. We all get on fine - black, white, Indian, Chinese... Everyone does, in fact, apart from these Muslim youths who've become extremely radicalised since the first Gulf War. This is because preachers of hate live in Luton and have been recruiting for radical Islamist groups for years. Our Government does nothing about them so we decided that we'd start protesting.'

Robinson could barely conceal his anger as he explained that the spark for him had been the sight of radical Muslims protesting when soldiers paraded through the town on their regiment's return from Afghanistan in May.

EXACTLY 

Following the incident Robinson set up a group called United People of Luton and, after linking up with a Birmingham-based organisation called British Citizens Against Muslim Extremists and another called Casuals United (largely made up of former football hooligans), they realised there was potential for a national movement.

Even within the EDL there are concerns over links to extremists. A former member called Paul Ray recently claimed that the group had been hijacked by BNP activists, including a man from Weston-super-Mare, Chris Renton, who helped set up the EDL website.

Ironically, Ray himself has extremist contacts, including a German former neo-Nazi who is friends with Northern Ireland Loyalist Johnny 'Mad Dog' Adair.

Casuals United was the brainchild of Jeff Marsh, a convicted football hooligan from Cardiff City's Soul Crew, one of the most feared gangs in Britain. Marsh operates behind the scenes, orchestrating activities with both Casuals United and the Welsh Defence League, a sister group of the EDL.

The public face of Casuals United is another Welshman called Mickey Smith. An avowed football hooligan, he is banned from Cardiff City's football ground. Together, Marsh and Smith organise the 50 or so gangs actively recruiting members across the UK.

The EDL insists it is separate from Casuals United, but dig a little and it becomes clear they operate hand-in-hand. Joel Titus is a cocky but politically naive 18-year-old Arsenal fan of mixed race. He tells me that the EDL youth division he runs has over 300 members across the UK.

'We want to hit every town and city in Britain,' he says. 

Titus became involved with the movement through Casuals United. And according to anti-fascism magazineSearchlight, his role is to recruit football hooligans.

He sticks to the 'peaceful movement' mantra but a text I later receive from him ahead of an EDL demo in London reveals his involvement with the hooligans. It reads: 'Right lads, the "unofficial" meet for the 31st (London) is going to be 12 o'clock at The Hole In The Wall pub just outside Waterloo Station. I will be there just before that. Remember lads were (sic) going as Casuals Utd and if you could obtain a poppy to wear it would make us look good even if we are kicking off. lol. Cheers lads. Joel "Arsenal" Titus.'

EDL members meet at a rendezvous pub before travelling to Manchester

Alarmingly, the EDL is becoming more sophisticated and those orchestrating its activities at the top are far more astute than its foot soldiers. I meet two of the EDL's key figures in a Covent Garden pub - a respectable looking man called Alan Lake, and a man who goes by the moniker 'Kinana'.

Lake is a 45-year-old computer expert from Highgate, north London who runs a far-right website called Four Freedoms. This summer he contacted the EDL and offered to both fund and advise the movement. 

'Our leaders in this country no longer represent us,' he says.

Lake's aim is to unite the 'thinkers' and those prepared to take to the streets. He describes this marriage as 'the perfect storm coming together'. Lake says that street violence is not desirable but sometimes inevitable.

He criticises fascist organisations, however, and says he will only support the EDL so long as it doesn't associate with the BNP.

When I ask about extremists hijacking the movement, he says: 'There are different groups infiltrating and trying to cause rifts by one means or another, or trying to waylay the organisation to different agendas. The intention is to exclude those groups and individuals

These men are outwardly intelligent and their political nous combined with the brawn of the casuals makes them a quasi-political force.

Britain's neo-Nazis realise this. For Kevin Watmough, leader of the neo-Nazi British People's Party and a former member of the National Front, the rise of the EDL is reminiscent of the Seventies.

'The protests remind me of the National Front marches, but I wouldn't march with the EDL because they have blacks as supporters,' he told me.

But other neo-Nazis have joined EDL demos. These include members of Combat 18 and the British Freedom Fighters, who later posted videos of themselves on the internet.

Watmough lives in Bradford and can recall the 2001 riots, which came about as a result of tensions between whites and Muslims. Bradford, along with Oldham, another tinderbox northern city that witnessed riots in 2001, is a stated target for the EDL and Casuals United in 2010. Tension is likely here and in other towns where the EDL is also promoting spontaneous flash demos and the occupation of building sites for new mosques.

Professor Matthew Goodwin, an expert on far-right organisations who has advised the Home Office, says that the police are right to monitor the EDL and to take them seriously.

'(The EDL) is now well-organised and not just a minor irritant. It has become a rallying point for a number of different groups and to have them marching through sensitive areas is a major concern.'

Communities Minister John Denham has also condemned the rise of the EDL: 'If you look at the types of demonstrations they have organised, the language used and the targets chosen, it looks clear that it's a tactic designed to provoke, to get a response. It's designed to create violence. And we must all make sure this doesn't happen.'
