Behold The Floating Continents Of Trash

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in Environment, The World

See the yellow? That’s plastic refuse that has found its way into the Pacific and were pushed into the North Pacific Gyre, a place where trade winds essentially circle and trap any debris into the massive areas you see on the map. One of them is estimated to be twice the size of Texas.

Brits Say Goodbye To “War On Terror”

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in Military, Money, Science, Technology, The War On Terrorism, The World, War

And by the way, we should too…
The words “war on terror” will no longer be used by the British government to describe attacks on the public, the country’s chief prosecutor said Dec. 27.
Sir Ken Macdonald said terrorist fanatics were not soldiers fighting a war but simply members of an aimless “death cult.”
The Director of Public [...]

What The Huck?

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Huckabee, Iowa

What Huckabee pulled today was not only hilariously and woefully transparent, it also made him appear worse than the guy he was trying to smear.
From NY Times:
Mike Huckabee is holding a press conference right now in which he was supposed to unveil a new negative ad against arch rival Mitt Romney. But Mr. Huckabee came [...]

Why Bloomberg?

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, 3rd Party, Bloomberg

The Dems don’t seem to be too hot on the likelihood of Bloomberg running this year. Especially NY Times economist Paul Krugman…
Seriously, why does anyone think this makes sense? I read a lot of polls, and they suggest that the center of public opinion on the issues is, if anything, left of the center [...]

Undecided, and It Feels So Wrong

By Alan Stewart Carl | Related entries in 2008 Election

O.k., it’s a matter of hours before 2008 and I have no idea who I’m supporting for president. Still plenty of time before November, you say? Are you kidding? In a month this whole thing will be whittled down to two (maybe three) candidates. Then I’ll just have to hold my nose and pick.
Now’s the [...]

March 5th Is THE Day For 3rd Parties

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, 3rd Party, Bloomberg

Why? Because that’s when Texas opens up for 3rd party candidates to get on the ballot. So it makes sense that we should know by then if somebody is going to mount a viable 3rd party bid…those “somebodys” being Michael Bloomberg and/or Ron Paul.
I found the date in the NY Times:
Bloomberg aides have studied the [...]

Donklephant Donation Drive Dead?

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in Blogging

So then, we’ve raised around $105.50 so far, even though the donation meter says $15.50. See, I wasn’t smart enough to set that up when I first started the drive, but trust that before I did we had around $90 in the till.
And while I’m very thankful for all of you who’ve helped out [...]

Video: Is The Primary System Broken?

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Democrats, Iowa, Money, New Hampshire, Republicans, Video

I think if you even have to ask the question the answer is obvious, but CBS tries to play it balanced anyway.

Okay, so I’m assuming you’ve watched the video, and if so you’ll know that most of the candidates spend nearly ALL of their time in TWO states. Only Giuliani has spent any significant [...]

Ron Paul IN Fox’s New Hampshire Debate

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, New Hampshire, Ron Paul

Yep. He’s in and he always has been.
The Boston Globe got caught up in it, as did I. But frankly, Paul should have checked his sources before he said Fox News was scared of him. Sure, I should have checked too, but I’m not running for President..
From Nolan Chart:
There is NO NH DEBATE on [...]

Independents To Challenge Repubs & Dems On Unity

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, 3rd Party, Independents

I think I know why Bloomberg and Obama met recently. He was probably warning Barack that if he didn’t run a campaign that was about building consensus and bringing this country back together again, he was going to spend $1 billion to run an independent bid the likes of which nobody has ever seen.
And now [...]

Republican Like Me

By mw | Related entries in 2008 Election, Bad Decisions, Libertarian, Republicans, Ron Paul

For a year the idea had haunted me, and Thursday night it returned more insistently than ever. If a Democrat became a Republican in San Francisco, what adjustments would he have to make? What is it like to experience discrimination based on political belief…

Fox News Excludes Ron Paul From New Hampshire Debate?

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Media, New Hampshire, Ron Paul

That’s the word on the street and it makes absolutely no sense. They’re going to keep a guy out who will have easily raised over $20 million once Q4 is over?
And let’s not forget how slanted Fox News is towards conservatives, so this move seems like, well, it’s designed to hurt Paul’s support in the [...]

2. Do you see President George W. Bush as a conservative Republican in the mode of Ronald Reagan? (Republicans Only)
Yes 7%

Ouch.

Romney’s Woes

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Money, Romney

I doubt he’ll run out of money, but the following says a lot about his inability to gain true front runner status.
From The Huffington Post:
From a purely business point of view the past four weeks have marked an extraordinary setback for the Romney campaign.
Since January 1, 2007, the former Massachusetts governor has spent well in [...]

McCain Attacks Romney With His Own Words

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, McCain, Republicans, Romney

Question for Republicans…since your party painted John Kerry as such a flip flopper in 2004, do you really think it’s wise to nominate Romney? Because ads like the following will no doubt pop up time and time again in the general election.

And isn’t it interesting the ad was created by some media consultants who left [...]

This Is A Change Election

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Barack, Hillary, Iowa, Polls

In poll after poll, voters are saying they want new ideas as opposed to experience.
From Bloomberg:
If the desire for dramatic change is on voters’ minds over the next 11 days in Iowa and New Hampshire, Obama enjoys real advantages.
Democrats in both states say the need for new ideas is more important than experience. In [...]

Ron Paul Plays Religion Card In New Ad

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Religion, Ron Paul

First he said this…
“It reminds me of what Sinclair Lewis once said. He says, ‘when fascism comes to this country, it will be wrapped in the flag, carrying a cross.’ Now I don’t know whether that’s a fair assessment or not, but you wonder about using a cross, like he is the only Christian or [...]

Biden To Play Spoiler?

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Biden, Iowa

(AP Photo by Evan Vucci)
Joe Biden is sort of like the anti-Obama. He’s deeply entrenched in Washington, is a firm believer in the process and has a boatload of national legislative experience.
So will that help him make an impact in Iowa?
Well, if you ask Joe Biden…
DES MOINES – – Joe Biden is talking. “Barack [...]

Obama: Politically Agnostic?

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Barack

Interesting New Yorker article out earlier this year that I missed.
Key paragraph:
He doesn’t often criticize the Bush Administration directly; in New Hampshire recently, he told his audience, “I’m a Democrat. I’m considered a progressive Democrat. But if a Republican or a Conservative or a libertarian or a free-marketer has a better idea, I am happy [...]
