Obama Quits Trinity

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Barack, Race, Religion, Video

While this won’t shut up critics who think Obama actually believes the nonsense that Wright said, it will stop stories like this latest Father Pfleger flap from happening during the general election.

Here’s a reaction from The Corner:
It’s been just over two months since Obama’s Philadelphia speech on race — the one that was compared by [...]

The New Number: 2,118

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Barack, Democrats, Florida, Hillary, Michigan

The totals are obviously dependent on different counts, but Obama now has about 2,052 and Clinton has about 1,877.
Here’s more…
In a huge blow to Hillary’s hopes, such as they are, the DNC Rules and Bylaws Committee has now voted in favor of a compromise measure for Michigan, giving 69 pledged delegates to Hillary Clinton and [...]

Michigan Proposes 69-59 Pledged Delegate Split

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Barack, Democrats, Hillary, Michigan, Pledged Delegates

That’s in favor of Hillary, so she could come out of today with a net of 29 delegates if Florida is seated according to the compromise offered by Jon Ausman.
They determined this based on the actual vote, exit polls of who cast votes for “uncommitted” and voters who wrote in Obama’s name (those votes didn’t [...]

Obama Supports Hillary 19 Delegate Florida Win

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Barack, Democrats, Florida, Hillary, Michigan

If you’re not watching it live, Robert Wexler just spoke on behalf of the Obama campaign and he said they’d accept the Ausman petition
More from TPM:
“Senator Obama should be commended for his willingness to offer this extraordinary concession,” Wexler said, adding that he’s offering this concession “in order to promote reconciliation with Florida voters.”
Though Hillary’s [...]

Bill Clinton Okay With Seating Half The Delegates?

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Barack, Democrats, Florida, Hillary, Michigan, Video

That’s apparently what he said a couple days ago…

I think this will be the likely outcome today. And frankly, I don’t see any other way it can happen without tearing the party apart.

Watch Democratic Rules & Bylaws Committee Meeting Live

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Barack, Democrats, Florida, Michigan, Pledged Delegates, Super Delegates!!!, Video

On C-Span.org…
On MSNBC!

(by the way, I wish C-SPAN allowed embedding and then replaced whatever live feed they had with the recording of that feed. That would be great for us political bloggers…hint hint…)
I’m watching Robert Wexler make the case for Obama right now. He’s doing a very good job…because he’s talking about the actual, you [...]

Climate Change Bill Headed For Defeat?

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in Energy, Environment, Legislation, Lieberman

As is the case with many pieces of legislation…it doesn’t seem to have enough institutional support.
From Fortune:
The U.S. Climate Action Partnership formed last year won’t take a position on the bill, although nine of its members – including General Electric, Alcoa and four utility companies – signed a letter to senators backing the legislation.
The letter, [...]

New York’s Gay Marriage Provision To Set Off Firestorm?

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in Law, New York, Religion, Sexuality

Bravo to Governor Patterson for saying New York should recognize gay marriages from other states, but this has obviously made A LOT of social conservatives angry and they’re not going down without a fight.
First, Patterson’s reasoning…
Paterson issued a memo earlier this month saying that gay New Yorkers who marry where it is legal will have [...]

Notes From A Black Pastor On Reverend Wright

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Barack, Democrats, Race, Religion

With this latest pastor flare-up, I stumbled across an old post from Dennis Sanders about Wright in March.
He comes at this story from a very unique perspective, and as much as I’d like for the Wright story to just go away because I don’t think Obama should be held responsible for what somebody else [...]

Gallup: Obama Maintains 10 Point Lead Over Clinton

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Barack, Democrats, Hillary, Polls

Just today, Pew showed a 13% gap between the two…so the double digit lead seems to be consistent in a few different levels. Still, Saturday will be very important to Clinton’s future…and maybe voters are starting to realize how grim the picture is for her?

Here’s Gallup’s take…
In Gallup Poll Daily tracking from May 27-29, Obama [...]

Obama’s Stock Drops Among White Women

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Barack, Democrats, Gender, Hillary, Polls

Gee…I wonder why…
The Pew polls states specifically that Obama’s problems have more to do with personal reasons than politics, and in recent weeks Hillary has made this campaign ALL about how she’s getting cheated because of sexism in the media, etc. So who else are these white women going to point their finger at?
Here’s some [...]

McCain Shows Strength on Economy, National Security

By Alan Stewart Carl | Related entries in Economy, Iraq, McCain

A new Rasmussen Poll shows that John McCain is more trusted than Barack Obama on the economy. 47% trust McCain compared to 41% trusting Obama. McCain also edges Obama on Iraq (49% to 37%) and on general national security 53% to 31%.
So, what does this tell us? Well, as we already know, McCain’s strength is [...]

McCain Should Not Use Petraeus To Raise Money

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Bad Decisions, Iraq, McCain, Military, Money, War

First this…

Obviously this is a really bad call on McCain’s part, especially since the Joint Chiefs have recently said, very explicitly, that members of the military should not be involved with these political campaigns…
WASHINGTON — The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff has written an unusual open letter to all those in uniform, warning [...]

Obama’s Latest Pastor Woes Could Have Silver Lining

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Barack, Race, Religion, Video

Obama has already condemned Comedian Father Michael Pfleger, and his connection to this joker seems tenuous at best, but that’s not going to stop people from associating Obama with remarks he had absolutely nothing to do with.
Here’s a story from the Today Show…

Honestly, I think this might help Obama. Eventually, people are going to get [...]

Obama’s Weather Underground Association Not Such a Big Deal

By Alan Stewart Carl | Related entries in Barack, Illinois, Liberalism

There are plenty of reasons to be skeptical about Barack Obama and his qualifications to be president. But one manufactured scandal I think just isn’t that big of a deal is Obama’s past associations with Bill Ayers and Bernadine Dohrn, the former members/leaders of the Vietnam-era terrorist group, the Weather Underground. Mind you, I have [...]

Gallup: Obama Up By 10 Against Clinton

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Barack, Democrats, Florida, Hillary, Michigan, Polls

I wonder what it’ll be after Saturday’s Michigan/Florida decision?

The details…
Since just after the North Carolina and Indiana primaries, Obama has led Clinton nearly every day, including a stretch of double-digit leads in the May 18-22 Gallup Poll Daily tracking releases. Since then, his advantage had been slightly less, at five to eight percentage points, but [...]

Obama’s “Politically Ruthless Past” Actually Pretty Tame

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Barack, History, Illinois

Okay, so you heard the story from Alan, but let’s be clear about what Obama did here.
He challenged that printed names were not legally valid for petitions and that the petition collectors needed to be properly registered. The laws in Chicago state pretty plainly that people have to get actual signatures on petitions and that [...]

Obama’s Politically Ruthless Past

By Alan Stewart Carl | Related entries in Barack

As if Barack Obama’s skilled defeat of Hillary Clinton hasn’t already proved his political muscle, now we get this story about how Obama won his first election:
In his first race for office, seeking a state Senate seat on Chicago’s gritty South Side in 1996, Obama effectively used election rules to eliminate his Democratic competition.
As a [...]
